I know there is an easy way, because I have seen it on here, but, can't remember. Does any one have any good idea's on how to get the steering wheel off? The nut came off easy. Now the hard part. (240 Utility) Thanks

The cap had been off my 240 U so I had little of the nut left. After getting that loose the 1/4-28 threads were rusted out the sides. Three jaw puller, heat and hammer. I needed to replace the sterring wheel so breaking the plastic? or whatever wasn't a problem. Nothing was easy on my dawg. I replaced the plastic bushing with metal out of the scrap pile. David.

If you are replacing the wheel, just cut the old one parallel to the shaft with a sawsall, just down to the keyway. One whack with BFH on a cold chisel in the cut and it's off. Total time 2 minutes.Three if you don't have 24 volt sawsall.

On my 340, I put the puller on tight, then heated the hub with an oxy-acetylene torch. It popped off with a BANG! I tried a propane torch first, but it wasn't hot enough.

The steering wheel on my 300 Utility was stuck tight (puller-proof) until I heated the hub just enough to let some candle wax seep into the hub/shaft junction. Then it came right off.

If the solution below seems to be reluctant, Get the puller tight, and use a thin cold chisel to make 3 or 4 radial strike "dents" around the area the nut and washer were pressing on. This spreads the metal and shocks the sleeve without distorting it too much. Heat destroys the plastic in a big way. threading the shaft after beating it to death is also not the way. JimN

Should be at least two 1/4" or 5/16" thresded holes in your steering wheel. Attach a small T-bar puller or automotive steering wheel puller to these holes, puller screw pushes against the steering shaft. Tighten puller screw and give the screw a good whap with a hammer, should pop right off. Spray down with your favorite spray lube now and let soak until you get a puller.
