I purchased a little cub this morning and immediately noticed that the gear shifter gets lost sometimes, meaning it appears the shifter dow that moves below the plate slides out of the two nuckles that actually slide forward and backwards. I kinda have to hunt them dow by fishing around??? I removed the plate and everything looks normal, no damage etc. The knuckle on the right slides back and forth much easier than the one on the left??

There are some detent balls in there with springs that hold the gears in position. If one of the shifters is sliding without resistance, the detent ball on that side may be missing or the spring broken. Unfortunately to replace these, you have to split the tractor in front of the transmission. The shifter rods have to be pulled out the front of the transmission after you remove the pressed in plugs. The springs and balls will then pop out of their seats. If you have to do this, might as well replace the seal on the transmission input shaft and check the bearing for play as well. A loose front bearing and leaking tranny shaft seal are common. My Cub was missing the detent ball on one side and had a broken gear tooth. I suspect the gear tooth got broken when the gear slid into mesh while still in gear on the other side. Nothing to keep it from doing that if the detent ball is missing or the spring broken.

You will probably cure 90 % of the issue by building up the tip of the shifter with weld, and grinding it down until it just works slick. The width is usually OK, most wear is front to back on the corners.
If it still looses its tracking, the rail detents might be worn (spring and ball system. JimN

The Cub has only a round ball on the end of the shifter, not the square end like on all the other Farmalls. And the shifter rails are round rods with notches for the detent balls. Most likely there is a problem with the detent balls. See post above.
