Yes , I'm voting for the 1909 F Buick. Grandpa always had a newer Buick. I remember the 49 Maroon 4DR Roadmaster the most. It always made me carsick. Lot different than Dad's 49 Ford Tudor. And yes it had all that Mohair seats and door panels and NO you couldn't bring ANY food or drinks into that car! Thanks guys! The next one is tougher, two cars and an old motorcycle.

Well, I think we have the winner! So I was sniffing up the right tree with a Buick, I just didn't go back far enough.
Good on ya!

Here is my evidence (yeah I know, I'm way to into this). I took Gordo's pic (blown up one) and used that as a background. I then used the "glowing edges" filter in photoshop to make the door lines and such pop. I then blew up the Buick Model F, and layered it over Gordo's pic, and I made the Buick so that you could see through it and tinted it red for contrast.

As you can see, the door lines, the seats, the seat back height, dash and that see-through running board, all match up. The springs in front and back, the fenders, the steering wheel, even the upright hand lever on the side, all match up. Now the perspectives (angles & distance of the camera from the subjects) is different, but I don't think your going to find a closer match. :P

Hot Dang! Okay, so I'm just an amatuer slueth here, but I have at least satisfyed my own curiosity. I believe I have ID'd the car! It is, IMO, a 1909 Buick Model F. Compare.

Look at this site, and compare all these Buick pics to the original. This one, the fenders are rounded. It's a 1912

And here is another site with a 1913 with bench seats instead of bucket

And this

The more I see them compared to the original, the more I believe it's a Buick.

1fortyfanatic said: Cool pic, but I don't think it's a 1912 McLaughlin, for 3 reasons. First, it's too small. The car in the original photo is a BIG beefy touring car, high off the ground, with a running board well under the frame. Second, the fenders on the McLaughlin have an upturn that i don't see in the original. And finally, the doors to the back compartment are missing on the McLaughlin, and the back of the driver's seat is rounded, where the original is boxy where the driver's seat meets the rear doors

I think "small" is the angle and quality of the original vs. the new photo. It's a toddler in the drivers seat. Look at the front springs. Look at the straps that hole the roof. The seats look right to me, from what I can tell. Yes, the new photo doesn't have rear doors... they were removable I believe. The upturn on the fender could have been done during the restoration, or some other time in the car's life. Who knows. Almost 100 years old, who knows what kind of variations were made after the factory.
The Buick (McLaughlin) still looks like the winner to me.

I was going to post a pic of the 1909 White Steamer. It is high off the ground, has the straight fenders (especially the rear), the lower running board, the seat and door looks, all there. But then I noticed that in the original photo, the mystery car has suspension springs sticking out the front. My White Steamer, does not.
I suggest that you post this photo on an antique car forum, and ask for help on ID. Good luck.

Dave

Okay, but for the sake of us investigators, let's remember that just because the picture was taken in 1913 (we think), that doesn't mean that the car is a 1913 model.
Here is a pic of a 1909 Caddy. I don't think this is the car, but there are a lot of similarities.

This is the best REO example in my photo archive.
I also found a Buick that fit the radiator description very well, but was a much smaller model. Google Buick Images, and see if one matches, JimN

Gordo, My great grandpa had a Empire, that looked similar, (1915) It also had the left hand steering wheel. I would have to look for the old picture to really compare.

Here is a 1913 Caddy. The fenders are curved, and don't have the sharp flat bend like the picture.

Gordo, if you can e-mail me the photo, I can get it re-hosted so it's much bigger. It's very difficult to make out details with YT re-sizing.

Well there are some great photos of old American cars, but I am a little confused by the fact that the steering wheels are right hand drive, the same as our cars here in New Zealand. Was there a change in which side of the road you drive on over in the States at some time? I would be interested to know, thanks, Richard.
