I'm working on a 1952 Farmall M, and I am not quite sure how the front oil seal goes together. The old ones that I took out are about 5/8 inch deep into the cover, and there seem to be two. The new one that came in my gasket kit is about 3/8 inch and there is only one. Is this an update? Am I missing something? This one just doesn't seem thick enough compared to the old one.

Thanks

The caseih.com site shows only one item #62 in the pic. All felt rings (in my experience) keep out dust and trash. Put it to the pulley side. Also if possible, keep the lip of the new seal out of any groove. JimN

Thanks for the help. Thanks to the dog, I just found the felt ring as well (darn dog carried it off). So now I have the two parts that Owen mentioned. Does the felt go on the outside, next to the pulley, (if im reading that right)? Or other way?

Thanks

Owen's answer is useful, I'll ad that if there is a groove in the shank of the pulley, place the new seal such that the lip is not in the groove. Put some chassis grease on the lip when installing so it does not run dry at all. JimN

when it comes to any oil seals there installed only one way, lip to pressure or oil side.if installed backwards they cant seal and guarranted you will have an oil leak.the felt would be a dust seal.

The original seal consisted of two main parts. There was a felt ring that was a dust shield and then a leather lip type seal. In that application the lip of the leather seal faced forward and not the oil as is normally the way a lip seal is installed. The concern was more to keep out dirt that may be blown back by the fan blade than to keep oil in.

The new seal is just a single lip type seal. Since it will do a better job of sealing than the original I would install it with the lip toward the oil otherwise the spring inside the lip will rust out. Unless your pulley is in really poor shape, only install the seal flush with the front of the seal bore. that will keep more of the pulley on the oil side so if you later need to install a new seal it can bne installed deeper and the pulley will not be all pitted from rust.
