I have cranked H`s with mags for many years and never a kickback problem. I now have a Super M with a battery distributer. Any danger of kickback here? It`s nice to be able to crank if battery is down a little. As usual thanks in advance to all who comment.

I have hand cranked for years, never a problem. But, you will find the M a little hard to hand crank. My recommendation is to keep the connections clean and the battery charged. I have cranked my SA and C with distributers many times without problems. That way they start with a battery discharged so low that it will not turn the engine over. I am 70 years old -- Grew up with a mag equipped H. I have my opinion, the naysayers have theirs!

I've been kicked a couple of times, but no permanent damage... of course I'm younger than most of the people who have already posted.

There's just no other choice on an F12 or F14... and for starting the A twice a year it's just easy to give the crank a couple quick pulls. Can't crank start my H anymore with the live hydraulic setup on it...

To answer your question, YES, there is ALWAYS a danger of kick-back!

A set of points can break erratically if they have a bit of "tooth" and "Pit" wear. If the shaft is worn .005 issuse of timing are also compromised to the guessing stage. I agree with the majority, hang up the crank and do good maintenance. (they are good for setting tune up positions) JimN

Kickback happens cuz the plug fires tooooo oooo soon i.e. BEFORE the piston reaches TDC sooooo YES it can happen regardless if a Mag (its start/impulse timing) or a Coil/Distributior ignition is start timed too fast before TDC. On Mags I set em so she snaps right at TDC while on a coil ignition its when the plug fires (well DUH) which is just when the points break open. If you retard the distributors timing and have the No 1 cyliner dead on TDC and then slowlyyyyy yy advance the distributor timing n stop just when the No 1 plug fires youre close. You just dont want her to fire any BEFORE TDC cuz thats kickback city....

Battery igntion systems need decent voltage to fire correctly, so if battery is a little low, you will get weak voltage to igntion system, could cause to fire out of time, and could kick you. I agree with Allan, cranks are hanging in shed, I have a heavy jump pack for the low battery situation.

I had one kick back years ago, it spoiled the rest of my weekend and a few more weeks with my fracture ! The points in the electical system were alittle off ! My 2 cents..... ..

I use a battery charger, jumper cables or a new battery. Seems to work and no chance of breakin' yer arm neither.

Cranks are all tucked neatly under the workbench along with the pulleys. Pretty sure I saw 'em 3 or 4 years ago. :>)
