I have a brush mower I inherited when I bought my '44 A. It 5' and it's so old I don't know what make it is. It does not have any name on it anywhere. Looks like it may even be shop built. I worked with the guy I bought it from and he said he mowed all the time with it with no problem. I have questions: 1.) Is a 5/16” Grade 5 bolt from Lowe’s okay for the shear bolt on the PTO coupling? 2.) I have a shop made drawbar on it and it hooks up good to the mower. I plan on hooking up chain from the back of the mower deck to the back of the tractor to keep the new tailwheel assembly I bought just touching the ground. Two steel bars from front of tractor to drawbar, does this setup sound okay? 3.) The stuff I need to mow is not very thick. Other than taking care of the mower pushing the tractor, is there any other things I need to be aware of? Thanks, everyone, Larry.

I disagree with Bill Lisbon, A grade 3, or unmarked bolt is more likely to shear than a grade 5 by a large difference. If bolts are bending, it is because the shear coupling is not tight. A tight coupling has less than .005" between outer and inner shafts. (or flanges). Most are designed for soft bolts, and the frequent shearing is from serious limbs or dirt encounters. JimN

Last time I used a grade 5 bolt for a shear pin it cost me a set of gears in a rotary mower. Overunning coupler is a must.

You want to use a grade 5 bolt as a shear bolt . A grade two bolt won't shear, it will bend before it breaks, and you will have a hard time getting it out of your shaft.

Shear bolt grade 5 sound a little strong, but I'm here and your mower is there. I would start softer and work up if it breaks. It's there to protect something.
