SMTA...... Deal or no Deal???

My dad has found a gas SMTA that he might be able to get ahold of. It has not been run in about two years but is free and the tin is in good shape on it and everything is there. Has steel wheels on it instead of rubber but it is bolted to the cast hubs so all we would need is the rims and tires all around. Dad says the guy MIGHT be asking $2000.00 for it. Was curious with having to get tires, rims and not knowing how or even if it runs if it would be worth it or not? I have not seen it but I know if my dad is interested in it, it would have to be half decent looking for him to consider it. Almost forgot, it has a wide front on it, if that makes a difference.

What's your opinions on it?

I saw a Super M-TA at auction that had been sitting for a very long time. All tires were rotted off of it. Very rusted and dinged up tin. Tree growing in the drawbar. Steering wheel was shot. No fenders. Seat had rust holes in it.

It brought $750.00. That was about 18 years ago !

I'd for dang sure ensure it's a SMTA before giving that kinda money. I'd check the SN on the plate. If the plate is gone I'd be suspect. Check the casting codes on the belly of the machine. I'm not sure what the codes are off the top of my head but there are casting differences between the later 400's/450's and the SMTA's. Make sure you aren't buying a homemade SMTA. I've been hearing about some of them popping up out there. It might be exactly like you say but you better be sure it is before giving $2k for a machine that's only worth a couple hundred if it turns out to be a phony.

I am pretty sure it is what they say it is. Have known of the people since I was a kid. That aspect doesn't worry me too much.

Sounds likea sweet deal to me. Heck if your not interested let us know where it is?? As far as getting it back to rubber just find another old M-450 that has good tires. You could probably resell the steel and come out ahead. SMTA was limited in production as it was replaced by the 400. Sitting 2 yrs is nothing, it's 5-up when problems araise and engines start to stick.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I was thinking the same thing as most of you on it. The tractor would be bought and kept and more than likely restored. The steel that are on it are probably made up ones, as it is onwed by an amishman and around here they usually make up their own steel for their tractors. If we can strike a deal should be a good addition to the other M's and H's we have.

Again thanks for the replies and you comfirmed what I was allready thinking. Just wanted to see if my thinking was inline or not.

This is my take. If the steel wheels are IH steels off an M, for example,then the steel wheels, in good shape can be traded for a set of rubber tires and wheels. so that will lower the price to get a rubber set up for it. From that point of view, that makes a SMTA for $2K a good deal. A WFE alone, if it is a good one, is worth 400 dollars plus, by itself. A DIY rebuild on engine can be done for about $5-600.00 So, as others have said, that in my opinion is a very good price for a SMTA. Now if you are looking for something to fix and resell, then it may no be a good deal for you, but if it is a fix it and use it or keep it, then it is.

If I were in your shoes, I would pounce on it. If issues are found, like a cracked head, or block casting, or major issues with the trans gears after getting it running, I would put a rider in the sale for adjustment, but that is a pretty sweet tractor. JimN

Since it is a SMTA..I would buy it for $2000 as you have described. There may be unknowns, but regardless of the $ invested, that model will hold its value and be worth the money.

They aint makin em no more it would part out for a bunch. Ifn ya want one go for it. With new tires and rims would go for 3-4 thous. They arent getting any cheaper and you could spend several hundred just in freight travel to look and so forth.
