I have a 48 h converted to 12 volts.My alt has a L and S instead of a 1 and 2.Can't seem to get it to charge, when i pull the pos cable it quits.Any help out there?thanks Kevin

Assuming you've got a Delco alternator, your L and S terminals are equivalent to the #1 and #2 terminals respectively.

Like Bob mentions below the L should be fed from the igntion switch thru a warning lamp. And S should be hot all the time (easiest way is to pigtail it directly from the alternator output stud).

Also NEVER disconnect a battery cable with the engine running! That's an excellent way to fry an alternator (don't ask how I know this....)

DON'T pull the battery cable on an alternator-equipped unit to "see if it's charging"! If the alternator IS working, the resulting voltage surge CAN kill it.

Check the voltage at the alternator's output with an ANALOG meter... you should see at least 13.5 Volts, and not over 14.75 Volts.

"L" = (more or less) #1. Gets power through an Idiot Lamp while the ignition is "ON"

"S" = #2 Voltage SENSE... ALWAYS at battery voltage.

If that's a delco with an S and L, i believe you only need the L hooked up to a light, as that type senses internally. there are probably 2 more lettered terminals as well, many things the lowly alternator has to do since the mid 80s.
