Neither of my books says anything about the lubrication of the IH injector pump. It has a spring loaded cap at the rear of the pump and a drain towards the front. In my archive search I saw where IaGary warned not to run it dry but nothing about how much of what lubricant. Also what about engine oil, things have changed dramatically since my book was printed. Won't be operating it much in the winter here in the midwest so will 15w-40 be ok or is there something else I should consider?

Use the same oil you use in the crankcase. Fill until oil comes out the petcock on the side of the pump. These are prone to leak diesel into the oil sump of the pump, so check often by draining a little out the level petcock to see if the oil is thinned by diesel. The instructions for changing the oil in the pump are in the lubrication section of the owners manual. Page 17 in the one I have which is dated 12/7/49.

Use the same oil as the engine. If you have the bosch pump it holds 3/8 pint and the IH takes 1/2 pint. The book said to change it the same time you change engine oil.

Thank you all very much, will write that in my book. I drained a little out and it was very thin and had water in it. I haven't started it since.

As Steven indicates, Engine oil is the answer. I can't remember if mine had a level petcock, or level plugI would go to the owners manual. JimN

A good 15w-40 diesel engine oil in both will be good.
