Any help would be appreciated. It has fresh gas,
good spark, runs weakly on choke, but switches when warm. Carb is now off and all passageways are clear. Thanks

Do you have the correct spark plugs. The correct plug is a Champion D 89 D. This plug has a very long electrode. If you have just regular plugs in there, it won't be easy to start. I have to choke my MD to keep it running until it warms a bit, but it starts easily.

Somehow your engine is running lean in the gasoline mode. Possible causes:

- Obstruction in the carb fuel circuit (sounds like you've already checked for this)

- Carb float level set too low. Or the float lockup linkage is not letting the float drop all the way when it's in gas mode.

- Carb air valve disc gap set too wide (the gap is adjustable on early carbs - not sure if it is on the later ones...)

- Manifold butterfly valves are not closing fully in gas mode (linkage adjustment or damaged butterfly plate(s)).

- Air leak at the carb or head manifold gasket.

Try removing the drain tube and plug it with your thumb at first to see if it helps. There is a check valve that might be sucking air requiring the choke to keep it running. It is retired of course #23, air valve control. Hope this link works. Don't know a lot about these but what I've learned I'll not soon forget.
