We are restoring an H Tractor and cannot get the right setting on the ring and pinion. Howls too much in road gear going down the road. Put in another used ring and pinon and still howls! All new bearings and gears look good. What are we doing wrong setting this up? We need some help. Thanks-----

Wayne,

You'll never shut it up with used gears; just no way it's ever gonna happen. New set is the only solution.

Also, what kind of shape are the bulls in?

Allan

What are you running in there for oil?

85w-140 will be quieter than straight 90... and if you're running Hy-Tran you're going to have noise no matter what.

once the howel is there you wont get rid of it with adjustments, because the pattern is already worn in.it has to be set properly new.you can adjust the backlash and move pinion where it looks halfass good on the crown, but you wont get a good pattern once its in that shape.the remedy is a new one but you dont want to go there so you will have to get used to a howel or whine.the used one you put in you needed the lash and should have checked the pattern before disassembly, it would have showed if it was worth attacking.

H transmissions / rear ends are known to be noisy. How loud is it ? In reverse, mine makes as much noise as the hydraulic pump.

What are you doing to set up the ring and pinion ?

Greg
