Hi All , The tranny rebuild is moving along slowly . I ended up removing the final drive too . The bearings in the differential and bull pinions appear by the part numbers on them to be the factory installed bearings from 1947 . They are all pretty well worn out , rust pitted and loose . It'll be a few weeks till the budget allows for another $500 worth of bearings . I did get the reverse idler bushings installed and reamed to size and put back in the tractor as well as the lower shaft . I also replaced the pto pilot bushing and honed it to size . I warped the input shaft seal putting it in the bearing retainer last night so I'm waiting on a new seal ( Dumb mistake from being in a hurry to get home ) . Now I'm almost at a standstill for a while till I get bearings for the final drive . More later . BTW If anyone has a belly pump drive for the front of the lower shaft that's in very good shape I'd be interested in buying it . Thanks ! ...Randy

What did the axle bearings end up costing?

Hi colekicker, I haven't had the money to buy them but my neighbor found some after market ones for about $50 less per bearing than what CIH wants . I'm kind of leery about buying after market for this type of thing . Unless it's the same brand as the oem uses . ...Randy

The best prices I've found for a Super M (not sure if it's the same bearing or not) is $81 for the inner and $74 for the outer. They're both the same size, but the inner has more balls and thus more load capacity. Local bearing house wanted $125 for the inner! The inner is a 214W and the outer is a 214KD.

I'm going through the same thing with a Super M. Sure is a budget buster buying those bearings and stuff! The way I look at it though is that the cheapest cheapy Mahindra or whatever kind of china made tractor you can find new will still cost thousands and thousands more than what you'll invest in that M, and your M will then last another 50 plus years which I'm sure the china tractor won't!

Did you get the reverse idler and pto bushings from the dealer or were they off-the-shelf industrial stuff? I'll be doing those too.

Hi CenTexFarmall , I hope you're right about it being worth it ! I could have bought a Super M with a loader that ran good yesterday for a couple hundred more than what I will have in parts for this old M .

So far I've gotten everything from CIH . I haven't gotten the axle or final drive bearings yet due to lack of money . I don't think I'll be getting those from CIH though as the neighbor that I'm doing the rebuid at found me bearings for about $50 less per bearing than CIH for the diff and bull pinion . I already have everything needed to complete the transmission . I got the reverse idler and pto pilot bushings from CIH also . Unless you have a ream of the right size you might want to take the reverse idler to a machine shop along with the shaft and have it done by them . That set me back 20 bucks but I got a perfect .003 fit on both ends . I used a brake hone to do the pto pilot bushing and some plumbers mesh to do the pto shaft end . It's a snug fit but there's room for oil in there . Good luck with yours !! ...Randy

Good luck finishing the M. Post a wanted ad in the YT Classified Ads on the left to find the belly pump part you need.

Andy.
