Hey couldn't resist an O/T here. Andrew just completed the orals for his Surface warfare pin and was successful. I am not 100% sure how big of a deal this is, but I know he studied for it quite a bit for it and I know it had to be done while at sea.

He got out of boot camp almost exactly a year ago. He has also taken his test for E-4, but hasn't heard the results yet. He thought he did OK.

Thanks for all the advice you guys gave me when he was first going in. Amazing what all can happen it just a year!

Yes. It's been a number of years since I looked into it for one of my folks, but BOOST should still be around.
If your son wants to pursue that, and really has the drive, then he will have to not take NO for an answer. He needs to get with his Command Career Counselor right away and find out what programs are available to him. He can also ask his Division Chief if the CCC seems unwilling or unable to help. Chief's are always a good resource.

Gene, Great to hear the boy is doing so good. Tell him to keep at it. before he knows it he will have enough years to retire. I turned around afew times and before I knew it 22 years in the Air Force has passed. I have 18 months to go before I join the wife in Kentucky. THe hard part is the tractor is there. Boy do I miss them both. lol

Yes...seems that its the same story...if you are in the navy...study hard and pass the tests you are promoted. But if in the USAF as I was, and if you keep your nose burried about 1/2 foot up someones rear end and kiss it a lot, you get promoted----and then as now...you were lucky to get E-4 rating in 4 years....I loved my tour in the AF but I think if I were young and would do it again, I would chose the Navy.

Glad to hear he's doing well. Results should be out late April early May. I forget his rate?

As far as his ESWS pin, that's outstanding that he's going after it so soon! I did the same for my Aviation Warfare Specialist pin. It will pay off in general knowledge, and will show him as a go-getter amongst his peers.

Has he looked into an Officer Assestion avenues? If he's under 21, and doing well, he can apply for the Naval Academy, which has many slots each year set aside for active duty enlisted that go unfilled every year. If he's at all interested, he should start now! Take it from a guy who started too late.

Mike:

That's good advice. At the Air Force Academy, some of our best cadets were "prior enlisted." And if it's still the way it was then, he'll get a significant pay bump for that after he graduates.

I have been to visit the Air Force academy several times. We had started the process to try to get our oldest son placed there, but his interests changed. He got a BS in International Agriculture from MU and is now starting on his MBA ( Thank goodness John Deere will pay for it as an employee).

Andrew, the youngest was not a very good high school student. Do they have a program, sort of a prep school for someone who needed to make up for what they farted away in high school?

As a "prior enlisted" I had an opportunity to go to the Acadamy. After my 4 year stint, I decided to take a short break...BUT...then, just before the sign up, I met MS. Ginia and that shot that in the foot...went to Wake Forest Law School instead...I ocasionally day dream and wish I had went on through the Academy and made a career with the AF

Congrats to Andrew! Qualifying for the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation is a lengthy process requiring a tremendous knowledge of shipboard characteristics well outside of ones own rating or job. At least when I went through the process umpteen years ago, my Commodore chaired my oral board and took no prisoners. As I remember, damage control, ship propulsion, and weapons systems were the major portions of the qualification. I'm sure Andrew will wear his "Waves 'N Blades" pin proudly and with honor.

Thanks guys. Thanks for the info Farmer Bob.
Where are you at and how long were you in for?

I have always been a military history buff. In reading some of the suff Andrew had to know, It asked some questions about the WWII battle for Leyte gulf. I had sent Andrew a book titled " Halseys Typhoon", I just finished reading "Last stand of the tin can sailors", and am now reading "Clash of the carriers".

Kinda a coincidence. I think he always thought I was part nuts because I was always relating these stories that I had read to him.

Thanks again, Gene

Happy to say I did the full 30 yrs and few days over just for good measure. The last 8 years were spent as a Command Master Chief and ended up closing my career out at the Headquarters for the Pacific Fleet Staff in Pearl Harbor. It kept getting easier in many ways the longer I stayed but as others will say, it also changed a lot over that period and not all of the changes were for the good. This "Kindler and Gentler" Navy of today is a far cry from what this and many other "Tin Can" sailor experienced in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. I will always maintain that the best sailors come from a farm in the midwest bar few if any.

Sorry, I'm on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state about straight west of Seattle across the sound. I grew up on a dairy farm in NE Iowa but made a promise to SWMBO to take her home after I retired after she followed me throughout my career.

Way to go on the Surface Warfare quals.
I still remember my qual board but it was for my dolphins as I am a qualified Submariner.
A slightly smaller club.
