Need 706 diesel advice needed

I have a 1967 Farmall 706 with the German Diesel in it and I am having a charging problem. I tested the batteries by themselves. Each battery reads 6.4 volts when the tractor is not running. You start the tractor and one battery reads 7.4 volts and the other battery reads 6.6 volts. Then you test both batteries together and that reads 13.7 volts. So based on this I think the alternator is OK. Do you think it is a bad battery or more of a volt regulator issue, or maybe something else? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
TJH72

when checking connections, if you find bolt on cheap emergency repair clamps, remove them and throw them as far as you can.
solder and crimp battery clamps are the only type that should be used. the others are for emergencies only, replace properly immediately when you are out of the woods.

You should charge those batteries after cleaning the terminals and then check the specific gravity
with a hydrometer in each cell and compare the readings. They should read 1.250 or better and the readings should be close to one another. Check the battery cables for cracks and if any are cracked replace them. I would use heavy cables too. If any of those battery cells have low readings I would replace the battery. Hal

Well with the tractor running at about half throttle or better you should be reading 14-14.5 volts . Now if you are having a hard time starting then with out seeing the tractor the places i would start looking is at the cables how clean the terminals are and tightness of same . What shape the starter is in . Have you had the batterys load tested ????? ya may have one that may not be so good . If ya ain't getting the 14-14.5 volts out of the alt. then time to have it replaced or rebuilt just make sure that is you replace it to keep your old pulley ya really don't want to have to buy a new one . and then install a new regulator. Like i said i can't check it over myself .
