I put new sleeves, pistons, rings, etc in an A last summer. Found it stuck in Feb. Took the starter off and could move the flywheel backwards and then move the engine with a crank clockwise until it hit the "hard spot". I backed it off a few times, put WD 40 in the cylinders and after a few times of back and forth I could crank the engine. Put some more WD in and now it's stuck again. Not tight, can move it a little so I know I'll get it loose.

My question, what "builds up" on the cylinder walls to cause it to bind up? And will it hurt the rings to crank it past the tight spot? Then what can I do to keep it from sticking? I've rebuilt 4 other engines like this and have never had this problem. Thanks for comments.

ARE YOU SURE THE HEAD GASKET IS NOT LEAKING COOLANT INTO A CYLINDER? PULL THE SPARK PLUGS AND TRY TO CRANK IT.

Throw the WD-40 away it not made for what your doing and will not work. Fill the cylinders with transmission fluid and let it sit a couple days, be sure you put the plugs back in. Then after a couple days pull the plug out and the engine will probably spin over just fine. What you have is a new tight engine and you let it sit and it got water in the cylinders from condensation and thats why it locked up/ got tight. Also to help keep it from doing that again run a qt. of ATF in 5 gal. of gas and that will help keep it loose

If you are letting it sit a long time between runs, make sure to get it fully warmed up before shutting down and try a "fogging" spray that can be found at boat/ATV shops.

WD40 is not a lubericant with any life, it evaporates away, and is poor rust inhibitor. I would say there s moisture getting into the cylinders. Is the exhaust covererd, and is the pipe to manifold joint good as well. Running it periodically, will help. as will spraying LPS corrosion inhibitor into the cylinders through the spark plug holes if you need to leave it for 6 months or so. I suspect water is getting in.
