Anyone ever take apart and replace with new gets the inside of a starter?

Mine stopped working. Turns out the bolt where switch connected spun a bit, broke connection inside. I tried to re-sodar it, looked ok, cleaned the armature and brushes looked ok too but a spark at the bolt and no turning. Must have shorted somewhere on the shell or something inside is just junk.

Note have any luck looking for those parts, amature/windings etc...just brushes on-line. I bought a used one that works but would like to rebuild/keep as spare or maybe sell...advise? Thanks, Dan

I have done what you said many times before and what happens is the part you soldered what does it have 2 flat peices of brass or copper? Well the way you have it when you put it together the bolt that goes through is probly hitting on one of those ribbons Fix that and try again. JON

Nutz! didn't work! I tried it but just sparked again and I made sure no part of the bolt was sodared or touching walls or windings. Oh well, off to the electric motor shop I guess.

You probably didnt get a good job when you soldered that connection as not an easy chore even shops have a trick when doing that connection. You could have had anew one for 115 with 1yr warranty. Usually cleaning the slots and turning the commutator with new bushings and brushes will work if then the Bendix is ok.

Although it can be done, probably best to take the old starter to a reputable Starter/Generator or Auto electric shop and have them rebuild the starter. You'll have a good spare when you are done.
