I can remember when i was 5 0r 6..... .We took a trip to Wilmot SD where my dad spent many years of his life. We came to a bulding that looked like a big loaf of bread. When we got into the shed we came up to this tractor that looked huge to me! It was a Farmall H with a loader that was used to make stacks of hay and straw. I still can recall when dad hit the starter, it went wow..wow..wow..wow.. and then dad din't think it would start, but i wanted a ride on the loader...so he tried again....It went wow..wow.. and pop pop and then it was running!!! I will NEVER forget the smell of straw old gas and the spring time all rolled up into one. I wish i could get the tractor but it remaines in south dakota and is used around the new lake home. I would like to here some stories of the first tractor you ever saw! thanks for sharing you storie's. John Pine Island MN.

I would say a JD 3020. I grew up on a farm, but the 3020 is dear to me. Dad make a "car seat" on top of the big flat-top fender out of 1" EMT conduit so I could ride with him on various chores. I think back on this and wonder how I survived...

I am not sure what the first one I saw was, but considering my Dad owned a Farmall H when I was born in 1948, I am reasonably certain that is the first own I saw. I own it now, and will have it at RPRU this summer.

Can't pinpoint the first time I saw a tractor in general, but first time I saw one up-close was on Grandpa's farm when I was maybe 6-7. It would've been either the faded Massey 44, greasy IH 560, or the "huge" IH 856.
First time riding in one was definitely the 856 pulling a disk.

in the womb i was on the 656 and 400. as a baby and toddler i was most excited about the 60-56 as i called it. had my own words about operating it until i was about 3 and began to learn more words. when i was 3 or 4 i remember getting the spinner knob of the 400 slammed into my lip on a turn and bleeding real bad. I cannot pinpoint the first time i saw a tractor :)

Grandpa's Farmall M. I've been hooked on red ever since.
Do you know Rick Keane at Pine Island Tel? I do some work for them and he's always proud to show off pictures of his Rumley.

My dad had an old WD allis. It had the hand clutch and it was the first tractor I learned to drive, probably about 1969 or so. The first REAL big tractor I drove very much was dad's 656. I hauled more hay with that tractor than I care to remember. We had one of those horrid Heston "stack hands"... the stacks would fall over easily, or the tops would slide off or they would just lean so far you were afraid to even get close to them. The bale mover had 5 long tines that went under the bale, and a big "hand", that clamped down on top of it so you could pick it up without it sliding apart when it was freshly stacked adn still "fluffy". After they had settled for a few days, they were a lot easier to move. Half the time, the tines would hang up on the bottom of the stack as you tried to slide them under it, and you'd be shoving the stupid thing all around trying to get it on. Dad traded off his 656 last year for Case IH DC40 with a bucket. He's pretty much retired from farming but needed something to tinker around the farm with that was easy to het on and off of.....

Probably Dad's 1086. Other tractors on the farm at the time included a Farmall M, Allis D15, and IH 806. Grew up on the farm around tractors all the time so I don't have a specific first memory... but the 1086 is what I learned to drive and the first one I worked in the field. Dad bought it new and still has it, I'm hoping it will be mine someday...

My Papas Farmall C. He bought it new in 49, and had traded it for a Super H, then bought the C back from the gentleman who bought it from the dealer. That was around 72 or 73. I remember seeing him and my Dad bringing home on a trailer, but thats about all I can remember about it until I was older, heck I was only 3 or 4 at the time. I can also remember the Super H, but not until I was older. Just my memories.

First tractor I remember dad had a CC Case and I sat on the tool box between the fuel tank and steering wheel. Traded it in for a new 1951 WD Allis and that was the first one I drove. Then dad got a big tractor, F-20 since I could help with the field work and needed another tractor. Four years later traded it in for a M, then for a 400, and then a new 656

First tractor had to be about a 1949 red Farmall Cub. There's a 35mm color slide somewhere around here with Grandfather & myself on it. Bet LOTS of folks have/had similar photos. (Oh yes, as I got a little older, this same Cub of Grandfather's provided my Driver's Education; it didn't seem to be a huge transition to get out on the State highway driving a car.) This topic brings back so many memories & I could fill up a whole page or two, but won't do that to you all. Mark in SW Wis.

im only 16 now but my first memory was on a farmall M.. that was my first one i worked at a haunted hay ride at the age of 8 most fun at work ive ever had i got to drive the farmall M once but there were a bunch of olivers and some 2 cylinders huge hayride best one in the state then the male owner of the christmas tree farm got sick with cancer and died and he was the heart of the hayride. Mayby not the best memory on tractors as far as most of you go but that was mine and it was one of my better child hood memories for 3 years of my life

I grew up with tractors. From the time I could walk I was on a tractor so I don't have a first memory. I do have the memory of the day we got my grandfathers H. It had a wide front but it didn't work right. It would turn great one way I think it was left. But it would not turn right. It would only go about half way, so it turned real wide going that way.

I remember the day we got the 656D. It was a monster on our farm of 160 acres with 2 model A's, a 530 case Diesel, an M, H, F14, and 9N.
After we got the 656 we started to farm over 300. When I got big enough to drive it by my self, I was about 12. We started to farm about 400 acres. We got a Hiniker (spelling) cab for it and life was getting better in the spring but it was too hot to drive in the summer.

It is funny that back then I felt like I was being punished. Now I would love to go back and do it all again. Now that I can appreciate what we had.

Life was hard but good back then. Ron

Grew up on a farm, so have always been around tractors. There are two that I remember from early on, Grandpa's F-12, he used to stop it at the end of the field & walk about 100 yards to the start of the driveway to get his mail from the mail box that was right next to ours. I can remember standing at the window watching for him. I tried to find it, but its gone to the scrap yard, but we do have another one like it, but its not the same one. The other one is Dad's '44 H that he got new in the spring of '45-I still have that one. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
