I took my boys out for drives on the tractor. I didn't get pictures of me with my oldest (8yo in a week), but we drove around quite a bit, going to a friends house who has been wanting to see the tractor. I stood on the draw bar and got us going. He steered pretty much the whole time, with minimal help from ole Dad. Then I came back and my youngest (3.5) was begging for a ride. Wife threw him up on my lap and away we went around the block.
You can see a little of the sheet metal issues I'm having. I've been working on the house and haven't worked on the tractor this weekend.
Look at all that smoke pouring out of the stack!! Oh wait, it doesn't smoke at all! 8)
Both kids had a great time, and so did I. Well worth the wait and hard work.

Here, my wife told him to give a thumbs up. He flipped her off, not realizing what finger he was lifting!

The H is looking good. It will look great with the early style hubs and rims on the front, My 1943 H used to have the 3 tab rims, but I changed them to the early style wheels, I like them better and they are correct for my H. It looks like you just need to attach that last hood latch.

Andy.

Mike, I'be been following your posts for some time now and probably enjoyed this one more than any! Its great to see the young'uns getting interested early. When they hit their teens and the hormones kick in and they start establishing their own "identity", hopefully their common interest will help them keep thinking dad is cool. I've got twin boys, 9, a daughter 10, and another daughter, 12. They have all claimed certain of my tractors as their "own". I"ve taken time with each of them to learn how to safely start, operate, STOP, and shut down their respective choices, but I never allow them to operate them without my IMMEDIATE supervision. Too many bad things can happen far too fast. My oldest has become very safety concious, and is very helpful, putting along in 1st or 2nd on "her" Ford 8n, when we are picking up hay in the field, or treelimbs in the yard. The others have a ways to go. I really like seeing a face w/ a msg. You get a general impression sometimes of what someone looks like by how they write and little clues in their discussions. It sounds strange, but even though I've never corresponded with you, it seems like you're just someone else I know... One of my son's names is Carson. He got a big kick out of seeing your tractor parked in front of the "carson" street sign. I have a '40 H, but Carson claims the '36 JD "B" as his... Diversification is a good thing.

I just don't like the look of them like that. I really don't like the look of them like this either, but it's just getting me by. Eventually I'm replacing these wheels with non-adjustables. Those are what I really want.

Mike, you might be able to solve part of the hood problem by "squeezing" the top of the hood together. Sometimes when hoods set on the ground, the bottom pannels will flare out, or the center of the top of the hood gets pushed down. When you have the hood off, turn it upside down & support it on both sides, as close to the side pannels as possible. Be sure to support it both in front & in back of the gauge holes. The center of the hood HAS to be off the floor. Then you have to force the center of the hood down. I've used a short chunk of 2X8 in the steering rib & smacked it a couple of licks with a 4lb hammer all along the length of the rib. If you work right in the steering rib, it'll force the center "down" & the sides "in". This will bring the center of the hood up & make the exhaust & air intake holes "move" toward the center a little more. You have to decide where you need the most change in the configuration of the hood to make it fit & concentrate the force in that area. It doesn't take a lot of change in the center to make a big difference in how it'll fit, so you will want to check the fit often as you are working on it. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

looking good there Mike. You've done a great job so far, keep it up you got nothin to be ashamed of there. Those young kids are what this hobby is all about. Without gettin them involved there won't be any someday to show the next generation. Something I see here too, if you want to make that old girl steer even easier unbolt them front rims and put the rim tabs on the inside of the cast hub, and it should steer a whole lot easier. I had to swap some of ours a few years ago to the outside for something we were doing and was SOOOO glad when I got to switch them back. It makes a world of difference in the ease of steering. Of course if your not doing a lot with it, it might not make a difference, just a thought.

Anyhow looking real good and keep us posted as you've been. It's great to see the success.

Looks like you two were having a blast! How long before Mom came out and told you boys to put the toy away and come in for supper? I tore the engine apart in my 28 Chevy truck today to get it unstuck and have one piston to go. Be nice to have it back together before I go get the 23. I will have to give you guys a ride in it at the show!

Mike, WHAT a GRIP that kid's got!! Look what he did to the steering wheel!

Did you run her dry or fix that leak, cause I don't see nuthin pouring out all over the street? And you just know that thing corners like a devil with those high performance street tires you have on front! Just tell folks that those are special asphalt tractor tires, for city tractors, and that they wick away water on the road. They don't need to know any different.

Don't be surprised if one day when you're old and senile, those boys don't roll up to your home with a tractor like that, just to take Ole Dad for a ride and put a smile on HIS face. You are definitely doing right.

Looking great man, keep it up!

Dave

You are so right. Myself and all the kids in the neighborhood have a great time. I start a tractor and I got all kinds of help. My wife can't quite understand why we need eleven tractors when we don't even farm but one afternoon with the kids and I understand. Have fun with them because they grow up faster than you think.

You are soooo right...I bought my 1942 H to restore with my 12 year old...now 13 and on it's way as time and $$$ will allow.

Your son is too cute and I hope you keep the H long enough to stand on the back and let him take you for a ride...

Thanks for sharing..Dan
