wanted lots of feedback , my V-8 engine in 4568 IHC 4wd tractor is only running on 6 cylinders, it sounds like a loud diesel knock at the top of motor, both front pistons not firing,(why both front ones) cracked lines on those two injectors, fuel spurts out, no change in sound of engine, how could the two quit same time. what should i look at :~(

Rivir: Your description is valve lifter push rod. Been there and done that, you can hear it a mile away if directly in front of tractor. I don't have any V8 diesel experience, however it would be reasonable for a valve to affect an opposite valve.

I ran one of those for a couple years and I overhauled a couple of the 800s. My opinion of that engine is that it never should have gone into production. Gutless wonder, a 466 would put it to shame and, it was very expensive to repair. We had the same problem with one. IH used soft metal for the lifters and just glued a hardened disk on the bottom for the cam to run against. What happened to ours was, the glue let go on a lifter and the disc fell off. In no time, the lifter was peened over and got stuck in the bore so the valve couldn't work. I hope that is not your problem. To replace a lifter. you will have to remove the engine from the tractor and then remove the crankshaft to get to the lifter. The happiest day in my life was when we updated and got rid of those engines.

(quoted from post at 05:28:10 04/09/08) If I remember right those engines are designed to run on 4 cylinders at idle and all 8 under load. They will cut out every other one in the firing order. I know it still does not explain your situation.
Can anyone else confirm this?

The 4586 has a DV800 engine. The DV550 is the one that runs on four cylinders at idle and partial load.

Pull both valve covers and see if maybe a push rod may have broken and took one or more with it . Shooten in the dark on this one.

With the valve cover off, turn it over & see if all the valves are working.

I would pull those 2 injectors and have them checked. Check the compression when you take them out.
