I have a H that has a miss in it that I can't seem to find whats causing it. New points, rotor, plugs, distributer cap and wires. Still misses when opening up throttle, some at other speeds too.
Compression was 75lbs. cold, warm 55, seems low to me.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
David

well, the timing could be off a little bit, the carb could need some adjusting, or you'll need new pistons rings.

My H has firecrater pistons and it pressed 149-151 lbs on all 4 which was right on the money for firecraters. If I remember right the gas engine pressure PSI is about 120 and the distillate 110? or ??

The miss might be caused by loose manifold bolts. Spray WD 40 over the manifold while the engine is running. If air is leaking past the gasket you will notice a change in engine RPM.

stronics, sounds like it's time to try another gauge... Good luck!

Compression is supposed to be higher when warm, not lower!

If there is only 55 lbs you should have a serious smoker! Or some really leaky valves...

Steven,
It doesn't smoke, go figure. Number 1 has a slight trace of oil on plug but thats it.
I am really starting to suspect the gauge as to the readings, I was to believe higher reading when hot.

If you are sure your gauge is good, overhaul 'er.

That is lousy compression; it’s a wonder it even runs.

Allan,
The gauge has probably seen better days, I think I'll buy a new one tomorrow just to check again. I'm surprised it runs with 55lbs too.
Thanks,
David

I did have the throttle open, it was on all cylinders the 75 and 55. It sat for several years and has only been running for a couple hours. It's had some rough work performed on it and trying to sort it all out.
Thanks for the help,
David

If it sat for awhile, I would guess it has rusty valves and pitted seats. Can you do a leak-down test & see why the compression is so low?

If the test was done with the throttle open, all plugs out, and good cranking speed, it is low. Differences in compression between cylinders is moew important than the actual numbers. If your gauge is accurate, and conditions are as above, and they are all low, I would look for signs of oil consumption. if not using oil, the misfire could be sticking valves, or a leaky intake manifold, or intake gasket, allwing one cylinder to not fire. Read the plugs, Differences may allow diagnosis. Find the offending cylinder by pulling one wire at a time then replacing it until the guilty cylinder is located. Good luck, help us by staying with this nthread. JimN

Do you have 55lbs on all the cylinders or just one? if you do then its pretty tired and should be serviced..... but prior to that i would adjust your valves and make sure that there all set properly adjusted. but its most likely both the valves and the rings are going...
