I have an E4 magneto that I am reinstalling on a Regular Farmall, my question is do you want the spark advance lever all the way up or in the middle when you time it. I have read a couple of books on it and they are not real clear, maybe I am missing something.

Six pack,I was working on my F14 a couple weeks ago,I removed the Flywheel, and found the DC timming mark,When the mark was center of the sight hole, the piston was all the way up and the throw of the crank was pass up and down position,it was just starting to pull the piston down.I beleive this was designed so the motor will not kick back,I beleive this is the true TDC.I would appreatiate all comments

On my F-20, I put the Points Cover all the way down when I timed it. That is how I want it timed when it is running. To start the F-20, I rotate the cover up abour 20 degrees to "Retard the Spark" so that it is less likely to kick. When the F-20 starts, I rotate the Points Cover all the way down. That way the timing is where I want it. I believe this would also apply to a Regular.
While you are working on the mag, drill a small hold on the backside and run a wire to the ondensor. Connedt this wire to a On/Off switch from a H or M (One-wire Mag version). This makes an easy way to kill the engine from the operator's seat.

The below reply should have been addressed to F-Dean, sorry :-( In addition to what I said below, you don't have to do what F-Dean suggested on the F4 mag either. Rotating the point cover all the way counterclockwise will ground the points and thus kill the engine.

Sixpack, you can"t do that on an E4A mag, the condenser is in the mag"s armature. Becides, the E4A point cover has a stud to attach a wire to go to a grounding switch.

On the F4 and i believe the E4 mags, you remove the distributor cover. Rotate the mag until the pick up contact is at the 'center' of the finger for plug one. Set engine to TDC. Then insert bolts in matching holes on the coupling.

Position of the spark advance isn't important during timing - operator sets this by ear. The above timing setting is close enough.

Hope this helps. I can find a book if you need exact verbiage.
