Just bought a used starter for my 1943 H. The H has been changed to 12 v system. Now as I shop on ebay, I see some for 6v and 12v. What if this is a 6v and my systems is 12? The listing that I bought it from doesn't say either. So will it work? I've got the used one left and I know the pole twisted away from the sodared windings. I tried to sodar and burned the insulation so shorts out on housing. Maybe send mine to motorshop and resell this one...it does have ser# but I sure would like to use it if there's no big deal. Thanks,Dan

6 volt starter has heavier wire inside. Works forever long as I kn ow. Don't overcrank though. Got 4 of em like that.

I've read on this forum that the bendix is replaced with a heavier duty unit in order to better withstand the increased torque a 12v system causes. However, I've been told that a 6v starter can last you for years with no problems.
I'm currently using a 12v battery on a 6v starter. The 8 times I've started this tractor have gone well.

I changed my H to 12v 10+ years ago. No problems. Never touched the starter.

6 volt starter works fine in a 12 volt system. The original Delco starters had a red tag for 12 volt and a black tag for 6 volt, if it has been rebuilt and retagged, all bets are off.
