M trans mainshaft wear- what's typical?

Looking in the transmission on my '50 model M I notice some wear in the main shaft where the sliding gear sits when in 3rd. Not surprising after 50+ years for the most popular plowing gear. Looks like it's 2 or 3 thou. deep in the splines. Also notice some "pound out" of the splines in the sliding gear which makes it have more play than 1st slider or 4th/5th slider.

How typical is this level of wear? Does this sound like 'normal' (all things considered) or is this 'excessive'? Do you think it would be common in few, some or most of these tractors? Is it at all common to find tractors that don't exhibit this type of wear?

Is it feasable or practical to build up main shaft splines? What type of heat treatment would the shaft have from the factory?

You won't want to weld on those hardened gear shafts, all kinds of bad things can happen. You could ruin the temper, warp the shaft, or have a failure that sends chuncks of metal into your transmission. I just rebuilt my '50 M transmission and it was worked hard all of it's life, but I didn't see the problems you describe. If your gears are good you can contact Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch and he can fix you up with the splined shaft. It will be pricey, but Mike doesn't sell junk. There is nothing about about a transmission that isn't expensive!

Yeah, I know transmission stuff isn't going to be cheap. At least it lasts a long while. I'm not planning on some amateur welding adventure with the parts, just wondering if there were repair options.

So, Steel Wheel Ranch can make the shafts or they have NOS?
