Does anyone have a color photo of early 40's Farmall H that I could see? I know when most people repaint them neary everything is red like they just spray down the entire tractor...if that's the way they came, cool but in not...would like to see the different painted areas...Thanks, Dan

  • Firstly there was only one color used on the tractor: red
  • Secondly I think they literally masked the lights, bezels, axels, pto shaft, exhaust manifold, distributor, generator, and belts, then sprayed the entire tractor front to back, top to bottom all one color.
  • get creative =), this is YOUR tractor, not the factory's tractor. I use "Crossfire" automotive paint from NAPA with 2 parts hardener and spray 3 coats onto a primered light gray tractor. I used Rock Star Red last time, deep red with a sparkle to it, looked amazing.

I started sanding the tank today...the bottom coat was yellow...what that heck!? Then, grease/dirt under tank. Just a couple bolts later and I've got a seat/gear shift and a motor, a real mess in my driveway. MOMMA going to kill me! So, Red it is...as soon as try and put her back together...geez they tear down fast

The first couple tractors I did, I used yellow primer too. The reason is a light yellow primer will make the red paint reflect much better. You see, a grey primer will more coats of red paint than a yellow primer. Yellow primer would only need one or two for the red to stand out all pretty. The gray, because it does not reflect and actually darkens the look of the top red coat, will take 2 or 3 coats.

BUT... When working the farmalls and getting them dinged here and there... I found that the top coat of red would scratch much easier than the primer of course. And I would have yellow scratches on my tractor !

Dan: the method you describe is about right!!!
The distributor/mag and wires, steering wheel, axle shafts, lenses on lights (if any) and data plates on electrical devices (if any) were masked, or cardboard tubes were shoved over them. Then paint (no primer) was sprayed on with belta, hoses, and all exposed surfaces covered. I am somewhat suprised there wernb't more runs in the paint than I have found, but they did a fair job. The red color has always been difficult to keep looking good. Modern paint has pigments that are so superior to the reds of the mid century of discussion, that new paint looks too good, but that is because original paint began to fade to the traditional "rink" Pink and red combined color, we found after one year of exposure. original may involve compromising standards to the poor practices end of the stick! Good luck, JimN

The basic answer is that nearly the whole tractor was sprayed. If you want specifics to match the original appearance, get a copy of Guy Fay's Letter Series book. It has a list of items normally masked off, correct decal placement etc.
