What method do you Guys use to determine if a ball bearing is usable or a throw away, Such as a pinion bearing,

I give"em a good swift kick and if they double up and scream.....I figure they"re good. If they don"t do anything, they"ve gone numb and need replacing.

Hold the bearing up to a good light source,look at the inside cone that the rollers run on,look at the rollers themselves,and how loose the outside of the bearing is.

Also feel, does it roll smoothly, is it excessively loose. What state is the cage in. If it is a tapered roller bearing the recesses on the end of the rolling elements can indicate wear. tractorsam
