well i did it again. Brought the tractor into the shop last night to start going through the rear end when it fell of the jack stands and broke a chunk out of the bottom of the clutch housing and I wanted to cry. I went to a welding shop this morning and they quoted me $250-$300 for get it fixed and I called some salvage yards but they dont have any super h housings only h housings and the going rate for them is around $200. The whole problem is that I am building a show tractor and trying to keep all of my date codes as close as possible so the h housing are of the the question. Does anyone know where I can get a clutch housing with a date code of 4.26.Y or have it welded and hope it holds. Its only for show and wont be used for work but I dont wont to have it looking pertty and the clutch housing breaks again. Any suggestions. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it!!!

Thanks for all your help. I called Stauffer Salvage and got one that was only 3 days from my date code. What a find! Again I appreciate everyone for the help! P.S. If anyone out there has a front pedestal off a Super H around April or May 1953, I would be very interested. I found one at a salvage yard a while back but it had an August date code and would like to find one a little closer to April. I already overhauled it with new bearings, oil seals and primed and painted and ready to bolt on. Maybe someday down the road ill find another super h that needs a front pedistal.

The early '53s had teardrop headlights. My Dad's got a 1953 Stage I with teardrops and the 2-bolt starter, and I've got a 1953 Stage II with pancake lights and a 3-bolt starter.

I have a 1953 super h that is totally disassembled that I will part out and sell you the housing. If you tell me how to check the date code I will see if it is correct. I am sure it is a 53. If you are interested my email address is jadamstubby@yahoo.com....Thanks

Get it fixed if you have to have that date -- you can probably find a way to disguise the weld so that it doesn't show. Or find the latest and earliest date codes on your tractor and try to find one in between. Looking for Apr 26 1953 may be asking too much. IH was building maybe 50/day at that time. Looking at two months on either side of 4/26, maybe 5-6000 tractors would have casting codes that were close enough to yours, depending on the days/week the factory was operating. Call Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch, 785-548-7437 and see what he has. Bates Corp is another place that specializes in IH. To me, the date codes don't matter as long as the tractor is in good condition.

Thanks for the help. You wouldn't by chance know if IH kept the orders for the Super Hs. I was curious about what it came like from factory compared to what it has now. If at all possible, I want to make mine just like when it rolled of the line in 1953. Thanks

Those records were likely lost when IH merged with Case. Almost all the stage 1 SH's at that time had a gasoline (only) engine, belly pump, pto, belt pulley, starter, and lights, even though all of this was "optional", except the engine. Seat is the one with the large spring in the rear, small shock in the middle. No one will argue with you about that, and even if they do they won't be able to prove their point. What is the suffix after your serial number? Anything other than a J (Rockford clutch) is special equipment and may be of interest.

I only have a J after my serial number. I was also worndering what the x on the engine block meant. It is not with the engine number. I believe it is on the other side of the block. Did the early super hs come out with tear drop headlights or did the all have the sealed beams and for the rear did they have the rounded or teardrop style light. I have heard that some of the rear axles were painted and some were left bare. Do you know how the were. Thanks, andy

There is some controversy on whether the 1st SH's had the tear drop lights, I don't know. To me the flatter lights are one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Super H. It is my understanding that NO axles were painted at the factory. They put a carboard tube over them to protect them. There was probably some overspray, as IH was not very cautious about where the paint went. Your tractor is a 53, mostly Y codes, X is 1952 the block could have been cast in 1952, actually during H production, some people claim the last H's had C164's (SH engine) in them. But the X should be in the format of the other date codes, if not I don't know what it is.
