Silver and black don't like each other

I'm trying to repaint my Farmall emblem. I stripped all the old paint off and sanded it. I cleaned it, let it dry, then hit it with primer. Then I hit it with silver. (The paint is cheap stuff from Wal Mart). I let the silver dry for two days. Last night I tried to brush black into the background, but the wet black started pulling the silver up and mixing in. So, I laid a little down, and let it dry. Tonight I tried to put black over black, and what silver was there started mixing in again.
So, I'm to the point where I guess I should buy a new aluminum emblem, even though I'd like to keep the original.

Mike, you should not have to primer or paint it silver. Just clean it down to bare aluminum and paint the background black. You can probably clean, sand, polish the aluminum to near it it's original appearance. :-) Both my 1947 M and 1942 H have their emblem's yet. The black paint is long since gone, though a bit tarnished, the aluminum is still in good shape.

That sounds like a real good idea. I'll look into it! However, I don't think the red rear lights came about until the 50's, so I might need to modify the plan. But thanks for the idea!

It will be 12v, but will look original. I'm getting a 12v generator.

Hey Mike, I have forgotten your other post about what you wanted the light switch to do.

Lets see if this will do it.

1 off
2 dim fromt lights and red rear
3 bright front lights and red rear
4 Bright front lights and rear work light (clear)

If this is what you want, get a light switch for an 06, 56, or 66 series IH. I think it will fit inside your existing box on your H. I know the hole size and knob will work. The "correct police" will never know.

Just thinking out loud here Mike, since I sure don't know for sure(because it'll be years till I'm old enough to attain "crusty ol' bugger" status-haha)....

But are you sure that there was actually silver colored paint on those emblems to begin with? In my own mind, what I'd do if restoring one of them(and again I could be wrong since all of 'em I've been around personally are rust-colored) is to glassbead the whole thing to where it's a satin-silver finish, then just paint in the black part...and either leave it like that or possibly clear-coat it to protect the bare areas....

If you're bound and determined to use both silver and black paint, you could always just paint one color on it, then the next day send the wife out shopping and pop the thing in the oven for a couple hours to bake that paint totally dry before adding the contrasting color....might wanna whip up a batch of brownies afterwards to mask the smell tho...

I was asking Bob M about some thoughts I had on redirecting the switching to run the rear light. It's nothing I've done yet, because I don't have the lights ready for hook up yet... and I'm still looking for an affordable rear light to use. But I had his attention, so I ran my thoughts about it.
Specifically: In a 4 position switch, you don't need all 4 positions. So, I was hoping to use the switch as "Bright" "Dim" "Off" and "Bright(or Dim)+ rear"

Mike, make sure you are not putting lacquer base paint over the top of enamel. You can go the other way, apply enamel over lacquer paint and lacquer will not raise.HTH

Hey, awhile back ya posted about trying to use your 3 or 4 position lite switch for another application. I can't remember what you were attempting at that time. Refresh my memory, as I did an extensive testing on my switch today, to see what all I could use it for. Mine is a 3 position switch...results might surprise you...

Paint is funny stuff, Mike.

Most likely, your black is of some formula that allowed it first to adhere to the silver underneath, then shrink enough in the drying to pull it up.

A lesson learned best on a small part like your grill emblem. I've heard of folks that used the wrong paint over the wrong primer and had a similar mess over their whole tractor. Martha would not call that a good thing!
