I bought a new farmall BN today. When i got it, it wasn"t running. I got it running, it had some electrical issues &...it had spark plug inserts?? I pulled out the smaller plugs, removed the inserts, put the 4 right size plugs in & she fired right up & sounds good...almost no smoke. Why did someone use the inserts? What purpose do they serve?

I have used the "oil burners" before to slow fouling on the rear plugs on an old Chevy 350. They worked for my cause, but there was a disclaimer on the package. "Only use on up to 1/2 of total cylinders", ie: 2 on 4 cylinder, 4 on V-8. It said that the engine would run too hot with these on all cylinders.
Just my experience.

I tried the inserts on a 300U that fouls plugs and didn't have much luck with them. I eventually took them out and ran a hotter plug as suggested on this board, which has worked great.
We have been "hanging" the wires (boot off the plug) for years. This allows the gap for the spark jump to keep it running smooth. Haven't had to do this much with the hotter plugs in it. I like the "cutting the button" solution though. How much of a gap is cut in the wire?

I read an add for them to where you could put a hotter firing spark to get more of a bang for more horsepower or whatever. Seemed they were geared more for the pullers in the add. As long as they make plugs that fits my H, I'm good. 8)

I've mentioned this before but I had a old BF Avery that I finally got unstuck but it smoked like a tar kettle and fouled a couple plugs reguarly. Someone told me to "cut" a button in the plug wire so it jumps a gap. Still smoked but quit fouling plugs. Ran it that way mowing and scraping for about ten years. David.

yes...just a band-aid..... I bought a set for my BN due exsessive fouling....it starts rougher now but doesnt foul plus like before....not a heavily used tractor but it will be in line for a rebuild soon.....just like using it once in a while for odd jobs...

There are also inserts that allow you to use "modern" plugs instead of the old 18 mm. Basically worthless.

usually they are put on as a band-aid cure for a motor that fouls plugs due to excessive oil from either worn rings or valves leaking in to the cylinder. the get the plug up out of the combustion chamber so it doesnt foul as quick.
