I have inherited a 1945 Farmall H that was my grandfathers last tractor. It has the battery ignition with the IH distributer.I have talked to a few people that think that the battery ignition didn`t come out until about 1950.It also currently running with the 6 volt battery hooked up negative ground.I have no idea why they would have done that, but they aren`t here any more to tell me why.Any input would be greatly appreciated!

also, in the 50s, the overhaul kits at the dealer could be obtained to add more power. the different piston design required different timing advance curves. from what i"ve gleaned reading on these forums: an IH mag can"t advance any more than when the starting pawl retracts; IH distributors can advance more, and the adjustment of the advance is fairly simple.
I"m sure the mags could have been made to advance more but that may have required extensive re-engineering?

Check the regulator mounting tabs to see if it is a pos or neg gnd regulator. It should have 6v pos or just P if it is 6 volt positive ground-----or 6v Neg or just N for negative ground. This is assuming it still has a 6-volt system. If the regulator is a 6 pos---you will have to reverse the battery cables.

In the early to mid '50's, it was less expensive to change to a distributor than it was to repair a mag, so a lot of them got "converted". We had two '44 H's that we did that with when I was in HS. I think that IH might have had a couple years where they were "pushing" distributor systems. I remember that we went in our friendly IH dealer to get points, condenser, a cap and a rotor for one of the mags & came home with complete distributor for less than the cost of what we wanted. Wish I'd have pulled the mags out of the junk pile when Dad had his retirement sale. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Thanks, that makes sense as to why it was switched over to a distributer. It is starting to all make sense now.Now Iam wondering if the bracket will have to be changed too? We have been having a little trouble with it charging and it appears to have a voltage regulator instead of a cutout relay and I`m assuming they did that when they switched ignitions.I appreciate your $0.02 worth that is almost a teaspoon of gasoline these days.

yes your h came new with a magneto not the distributor that you have now. the electrical system is supposed to be posative ground. have fun with your family heirloom.
