I am working on a H, trying to correct a noisy ringgear and pinion. The low four gears are quiet and is quiet when running the PTO under load but 5th is noisey. I have twice now replaced the ringgear, pinion with ones that showed very little wear, I have reshimed the pinion in several positions and set the ring gear each time, I have even split the brake cage shims so I can read just without pulling the bull gears.I have tryed backlash from 6 to 25 thousands but still have the noise, The noise reminds me of an old speed jack while running an elevator. Can someone tell me what I am not seeing.

I know exactly what you are speaking of r4etiered. My grandfather had a 45H that just howled horribly in road gear. There was a very low whine in 1 through 4 under load but it was way too subtle to argue with.

There is no solution that we ever found. A cousin had replaced "everything" including dog gears/axles on another H doing the same thing and it still had a (now much less) howl in road gear.

Our determination was there must be something harmonic reference the casting of the rear end/transmission housing itself.

The casting itself was the only thing that wasn't changed and messed with.

The ring gear and pinion need to be replaced as a set. If you take a ring gear from one tractor, and match it up with a pinion from a different tractor, the result will be noisy. Makes no difference how you set it up or how you fine tune it, the end result will always be noisy.
