Farmall H drain on battery/bad starter?

My H is converted to a 12 volt. For the last year or two. I have noticed that the battery slowly weakens and goes dead. I have a couple of issues that may be related. 1. the tractor turns over really hard. I may have to hit the starter switch several time to get the starter to click. Eventually the tractor will turn over slowly and eventually gain some speed and start. I have the last few times banged a little on the starter and it seems to begin turning over a little sooner, than not.

I went to jump start it yesterday and with the ignition switch off the terminals sparked heavily as I was connecting to the running vehicle. That makes me think there is a short in the system, maybe the starter? I have seen the starter have shorts on a chevy van which acted similar.

Any ideas how to check for a short in the starter? or other parts of the system for live current?

How did you determine drain? If your starter is weak, you may need 105% of charge to get it to turn over; then you think it has 'drained' after it has dropped normally to 95% of charge by sitting overnight. Recently, I was fooled by my 140 starter; changed cables, starter switch, etc. Finally, I attacked the starter itself and one brush mount had broken, meaning the poor thing was only half a starter. Now it spins that motor so fast it scares me (partly thanks to all the unnecessary work I did).

What alternator do you have on it and is it a self energizing one? Some of the gm one wire installations will draw down. Also, if post one and post two wires are reversed, the alternator will draw the battery down also(10SI alternator). Also, if this is a 1 to 2 yr problem, and it is slow to turn even when charged up, you may be fighting a bad battery by now, and it could be a combo problem.....battery drain, and a poor starter. mail if you want info on checking for a battery drain, is easy.

If it does it with the battery fully charged, it could be the starter button itself, or the cables are corroded or you don't have a good ground. My M (12 volt alternator) did that, it was the cables. The sparking is normal. I prefer to connect to the tractor starter last, preferably the ground away from the fuel tank and sediment bowl. I do it that way only out of desperation, I do not like those sparks.

You have bad diodes in the alt. I just installed new brushes and diodes in my gm alt. for less than $5.00. They are available from any starter and alt. repair shop.
