Question 1: Was there ever a gear set made to slow a Cub down? Either just in 1st or overall. Question 2: Mechaniclly is there any real difference, {other than water pump,12v and displacement} between an early Super A and a late 140? Thanks!!!

I think changing the diameter of the rear tires would be the easiest way to slow down the tractor, something like a 12 or 13inch wide tire on a 16inch rim would work, something like that was offered on the cub low boy or Newer John Deere compacts. It would still have similar traction. Look at the overall circumference to see what the the speed change would be.

Hugh, you are great, I am surprised that final drive different gear sets were not made or customized for older tractors. Would a C gear set work in an A for example.

Rich: The final drives of a C are inboard, whereas the A are outboard so the bull gears and pinions are different. I've never checked out the differential and 4 speed gear box, they may well be the same. I've never had much to do with C, SC, 200 or 230. We were an A, SA, 100, 130, 140 then big tractors H, 300 or larger. I'm a farmer, only know the tractors I used well. You get one of these mechanical guys like Jim N, geneb, etc., they can probably answer your question.

YES HOWARD ROTOVATOR made a gear set-up that bolted on the leftside final drive that slowed the tractor down a bunch in all gears and reverse. Just bolted between final and tranny only too about a 4in space and had a lever on it to operate. Once in a while you will see one.

Rick: There were a lot of changes, however the basic design never changed from 1939 to 1979. Most of the mechanical changes occured during Super A production and not at model change as most folks believe. Super A saw a lot of mechanical upgrades, starting with live hydraulics, although there is evidence a few A were equipped with hydraulics. Around 1950 the steering box changed along with tyrod assembly. New tyrods are automotive type. The engine block changed at serial number 310300. Around 52 there was an upgrade to case hardening of gears, rear end, transmission and final drives. In 53 the ekectrical changed from cutout relay to voltage regulator. First pressurized radiator happened at serial number 336711 in 1953. Late 53 the hydraulics were upgraded, final drives changed and an upgrade to brakes occured.

At serial number 356001, in 1954, block part number 354898 R1, introduced back in 51 was changed to 3-1/8" pistons giving it 123 cubic inches for the first time in SA. Block part number 354898 R1 is the same block as used in SC and had always been C-123 in that application. IH kept the SA at C-113 by use of thicker sleeves. The radiator size increased, water pump was added and the tractor was offically called Super A1. Only 1,957 of those were ever built before the model 100 was introduced. Fast hitch was introduced near the end of Super A production.

Other than that there was very little mechanical change other than 140 got an automotive type water pump on fan hub. It also changed to 12 volt at serial number 26801 and to alternator at serial number 57723. The rest of the change is cosmetic. I may have missed a few things, as I'm doing this from memory this morning.

Rick-the SA's had the113 engine-I think starting
with the farmall 100 the engine changed to C-123- Most of the 100's have water pumps though on the Lt block -140's water pumps are on end of Cylinder head--Early model 140's had pull starters while later model 140's had key start
with solenoids as well as 12 volt systems with neg. ground- Hugh can be much more specific and
indepth on the offsets----- glynn
