I have the fan hub assembly ready to go back together. I've checked the parts book and it appears that the only gaskets used are on the front of the hub.

I understand the reverse direction of groove on the shaft to push the oil away from the rear of the hub, but I just can't get over the fact that there is no seal on the rear end of the pully/hub.

As long as it isn't overfilled, it doesn't need a seal on the back side. The groove on the shaft is designed to draw oil back into the bearing, not push it forward. The shaft is stationary while the pulley moves! Be sure to get the impeller in the right way. The earlier Parts Catalog drawings have it backwards.

I recently rebuilt mine per the manual, and was also amazed by no gasket/seal on the rear. I'm still rebuilding the motor so I can't tell you about performance yet.

They can work, though. After umpteen years of not even checking it, there was still plenty of clean oil in mine when I took it part. What an engeneering marvel!

Without looking up the exact instrutions in the owners manual, you fill the thing then turn it sideways (I think) and the excess drains out. I have had lousy luck overhauling those things, and IMO, it is best to buy a new one with sealed bearings, Chinese or not. I have two C's, overhauled one fan, it ceased while I was running the tractor for the first time, I was in the house, got back just in time to save the engine. The other C, I tuned up, put new antifreeze and a repaired radiator on, did not touch the fan. I did not check the oil. It seized after about 5 minutes. Coincidence? I don't know.

I think the same hub is used on a CS. I apparently had mine too full for the first time I run it up the trailer ramps after filling, the excess oil drained out the rear of the hub. It had run several hours previously and not leaked a bit. I presume it just adjusted itself to the desired level!
