IH 100 balance mower?

Going to look at an IH #100 "balance mower" 9' sickle bar. Never seen one to my knowledge. Anyone have an opinion? A picture? What to look for as far as problem areas? Also, approximate worth in good shape, new sections, spare section bar, some new parts?

Only problem is don't run over PTO speed, that is why you find the drive warn out.

We run ours just under PTO speed, between 475 and 500 rpm - seems to work good. Run too slow and they hammer, though.

I have a two point for for my Super C. It is similar to the IH 1300 because it does not have a wheel. Just wondering what the model number might be? Marv

Parts manual IH-P-MWR 70+ shows models 230, 1200, and 1300 were 2/3 point mountable and did not have a wheel.

Does anyone have the "yoke"? I believe that is what it is called that has the conter weight on the back and the part where the pin goes in to hold the sickle. I bought one that is all slopped out and I would like to get it going again.

A 100 is a trailer type mower, I believe the 3-point model was a 130 (later updated to a 1300).

The one behind the H is a 100, the one mounted on the H is an 1110:

Check to see that there is no slack in the wobble box. When you move the pulley, the bar should be moving back and forth.

There shouldn't be oil in the box, there are either 1 or 2 grease zerks under plugs. Do NOT over grease those, the seals will go out and you will need to have the box rebuilt (about $700 these days). They are very reliable and cut nicely if properly maintained. I think Dad said his 100 was bought used by him in the late 60's, rebuilt the box in the mid-70's and hasn't been touched since then.

My father-in-law has an 1100 he bought new in 73 or so and has never been apart. Has cut tens of thousands of acres with it. Proper maintenance is key.

I helped my dad wear out two of those, but I thought ours was a model #120? We bought two of them new in the 60's. Great mowers. I said we wore them out. I guess we sorta did. Who knows how many sections, guards, etc we went through.

They are still over at my brothers place, in the shed and could be running again with a little work.

I found one in an implememt lot in fair condition for $400 a while back.

I've already looked at those. I was hoping to see a picture of a 3-point model. Going to end up on a Massey Ferguson 150. I wanted to see how the hitch is configured. Gotta drive 75 miles each way to see it. Hoping to save a trip if it doesn't look to work OK.

I have a 100 and an 1100 here they are great mowers. Check condition of belt, inner and outer shoes for breaks or cracked, grass rods intact, both inner and outer, Safety covers there? Wobble box. Pull the bar and rotate the belt checking for slop in the box. Check oil level to see if maybe it was run dry. Ask if it has been rebuilt. Look at all the rock guards. 7 dollars each to replace those. If you have serrated guards you should have smooth sections and vice versa Is the cylindeer there? That"s 100 retail and 30 dollars at farm auction. One that is perfect to all these things worth about 800 dollars. Deduct accordingly.

Really, really good mowers. Biggest potential problems would be in the wobble box. As posted by GordoSd, remove the drive belt and try to turn the pulley on the back of the box. Watch the knife head. It should move in time with the pulley, no hesitation. Grab the pulley and try to wiggle it. The bearing in behind going is one of the common failures in the box. Also try to wiggle the counterweight, the one under the drive pulley. It is the back half of the front yoke that drives the sickle head. A little free play can be found here and still be OK. The box has two grease zerks, and is not oil filled. Grease the fittings SPARINGLY as specified in the manual. Over greasing blows the seals on the bearings and leads to premature failure of the bearings. There is a fellow in Aberdeen SD who sells Rowse mowers. He repairs a few hundred of these boxes every year. Does a very good job and is reasonable on his parts and labor.

If the wobble box is OK, check the breakaway housing, where the vertical shaft of the bar lift mechanism pivots. I have seen them crack around the boss that the pin mounts in. If it has a 9' bar, the bar can crack and break under the inner shoe. Only way to check that is to remove the bar and visually inspect the top of the bar, right at the furthest outboard hole. These problems I see are after many thousand of acres cut by hired men who are at times less than gentle with them.
