The tractor will start and fire for a second and then shut off it will not keep running unless the starter solenoid is jumped with a small wire from one of the small terminals to the batter bost on the solenoid. thinking it was the solenoid i replaced it and still having the same issue. any ideas where to look next?

Its the ballast resistor that's causing that problem. Hal

Should be two wires on the coil, one to where you are jumping on the solenoid, this gives you 12 volts to coil to help starting. The other is the run circuit from the "I" terminal of the ignition switch, it is either resistance wire or goes through a ceramic resistor to give you 6.6 volts so you don't melt coil/burn points. Start doing conntinuity checks and find out where the open is in the run circuit.

Check the ballist resistor up by the coil maybe a bad wire or wired wrong . There are two wires to the coil one will give a full 12 volts when ya hitthe starter button for a full shot of 12 volts to the coil for a fast start then once y let off the starter button then the ballist resistor takes over and you should have somewhere between 6-8 volts at the coil . So it is either a wire problem or a resistor problem .

with the key on the on/start position i cross the terminals on the solenoide then jump back up on the tractor hit the switch and it starts runs fine. i have to turn the key off so power is cut then go back down to the solenoide and once i undo the clips the tractor will finally shut off.

Back track from the coil primary. You have no ignition feed. Wiring, resistor or ignition switch.

It is running on the "start" circuit only.

Allan is correct. there is surely voltage from the bat term of the starter relay (solenoid) to the ignition sw, or it would not crank. Thus the wire to the resistor, or the resistor, is probably at fault. The ingition switch could also have a faulty contact at the run position. JimN

yes, there are various styles, including resistor wire that looks like regular wire in the system. JimN
