I am apparently not getting something inside the carb for my H cleaned properly. Are there any tricks here? I am missing something.

On mine, I couldn't adjust the idle low enough. It turned out that on the top half there is a plug that you take out with a screw driver that someone replaced with one too long that was blockin off the idle.

Tom, You need to copletely disassemble the carb before you soak it. This means getting a deep 1/4 inch drive socket over the discharge nozzle and taking that out. Also the idle jet, main jet, float, adjusting scrws and packing. Did you do that? Then soak, then use the carb cleaner and compressed air. Then reassemble with the COMPLETE kit, not the 15 dollar gasket kit. If you remove the butterflies make sure you get them in the right way. The edges have a bevel to fit just one way. What doesn't "adjust"?

I of course saoked in a gallon of cleaner and blew it out etc.

What it does not do is adjust properely when running.

I was curious as to whether these carbs had some special hidden cleaning secret.

Tom, sometimes there is crud lurking down below where that tiny little brass idle metering jet lives. You might first try running a very small diameter torch tip cleaning wire down through the jet. If that doesn't get it, you'll have to remove the idle metering jet to get access to the crud. The jet most likely will break off, and then you have even more work, but it can be done.

Are you sure you have an idle metering jet. Mine was missing and it took me a while to figure that out.

Yep, it won't idle worth a darn if that jet is missing, or if the jet has been reamed out a bit.

If I remember right it looks like it has a screwdriver slot cut across a small brass tube. The 'ears' on the tube break off.

If the idle wonders around, the bushing for the throttle shaft might be worn. Another place I've had trouble is the angled drilling that goes up to the slot by the throttle plate. The gasket that I just put in my SC carb did not have all the holes punched in the right place. That might be worth a look too.

like mike said , giver er a good soaking in carb cleaner. most auto parts stores sell the cleaner kit in a one gallon pail with a metal basket . take the bowl off, then drop the whole works in the cleaner over nite. i then use a spray can of carb cleaner with the little plastic tube to clean out all the passageways. WEAR SAFTEY GLASSES AT THIS POINT!! nothin 'll wake you up like a shot of carb cleaner in the eyeballl!!!if you have a blocked passage, a set of torch cleaning tips are handy to poke the clog out.

What leads you to the "apparently" part?
I soaked mine in carb cleaner and blew out the pieces with compressed air. All seems well.
