I got the carrier seal out of the TA on my 300 and you were right on . It was torn to shreds, So If I put it on wrong how does it go what side of the seal what way? Or do you think I just damaged it that bad putting the TA back in? JON

so if a seal has a flat side on one side and a pooled or beveled side on the other the flat side would go toward the clutch? cause you install it from the TA side and I would think the flat side would go toward the TA for a suface to drive from?

And CNKS what are you exactly calling the Lip? I ordered 2 new seals incase I screw one up when I asemble. I can give you a pic if you want of the old seal. JON

Re: Message for Tractor Vet and others THANKS in reply to MAGMAN, 04-26-2008 15:35:56
Thanks guys, I am sorry for the lip questions? but 17 years ago when I rebuilt this TA I did not know all this info and there was no yt in 1991. So I did installthe seal backwards. I thought being a mechanic back then that you put the seal in from the flat side. I am not sure if it got the seal all torn up from being in wrong or not being carfull putting it in never done one before that, LOL can say after a other owner and 17 years my kitchen table torque rebuild is still strong and working well just leaked oil. Now for my almost last question what would be a good slippery grease to use? KY? Grease Oil Mix? THANKS AGAIN JON

Rap the threads of the ta carrier with black tape and grease up before installing, this helps portect the seal if you dont have the special tool to install, once in place and the rear bolts are tight, remove the tape MAKE sure you get it all out, you can take a light and see most of the seal to see it. Been doing it this way for years and had lots of good luck.

Lay it on its metal back, you are looking at the lip. The flat side is opposite the oil, the other side faces the oil, or it will leak. I have never worked on a TA, only my 460 HU has a TA. But the principle is the same, regardless of whether you are talking about TA seals, axle seals or whatever. As to which side you drive it in on, that depends on what the seal is fitting into. Simpler if you can drive the flat side, but that is not always the case. Long answer to a simple question.

the lip side goes towards the T/A and this is where everybody gets in trouble as when ya start installing the T/A assy. the lip will catch and roll . At one time there was a special tool made to make this instalation go with out a hitch . So before ya pound that seal in take a close look at it and you will see what i am talken about . IT has to seal the oil in the T/A and not let it leak out to the clutch side .when i install them i have used shim stock of .002 so the square edge of the T/A does not get hung on the lip and cut or roll the lip . If you have a dental pick that is thin this can help by gently easing the lip over the seal surface as you side the assy. in . When ya have it installed make sure that ya get the nut for the T/A clutch flywheel TIGHT i have seen way tomany of them get lose.

With perhaps a few exceptions, all seals go with the lip towards the oil.

the seal goes in with the open side towards the ta to keep the oil from getting into the clutch. Check the seal surface on the carrier and check for pits. It may need machined, polished or sleeved. Make sure you use some grease on the seal surface when you intall it back through the seal. Good Luck
