Our 706 Diesel 282 has been running antifreeze out the overflow when not hot. WE replaced the water pump and thermostat. The temperature gauge fluctuates quite a bit and the engine does not cool at a idle. Some one suggested the head could be cracked. I was looking for some ideas where to start.

That 282 has a long and bad history for head cracking. Symptoms are just as you describe.

I'd do as the Vet says, yank 'er off of there and have it checked out.

Sounds like your getting compression in the cooling system . And the only way to FIX this is to pull the head and look first at the head gskt. then send the head out and have it pressure checked and magnafluxed There is no easy way out of this one SOO it looks like your going to get dirty on this one.

If it is full of coolant, and you watch in the beck while it runs, you should not see bubbles. A compression leak into the coolant will also smell of combustion gases. Kits are available to test for fuel in coolant. JimN
