Haven't had one apart, but it's my understanding that they replaced the ball bearings on the axle with roller bearings. Is this correct? Was it just the inner bearing or did it include the outer bearing as well? Was the axle housing replaced as part of this or was the roller bearing the same dimension as the ball bearing?

Also, was replacing the carrier bearings a seperate fix in the field or done at the same time?

Well this is interesting. So it was a tapered roller bearing and not a cylindrical roller bearing for the axle inner.

Grandpa's 560 does not have a delta stamped on it, but it does have a small "D" stamped in an odd place on the serial tag. It is a 59 or 60 model.

The one dad bought recently is 62 or 63 so it should have all the trimmings.

I didn't realize that the fixes were that extensive. No wonder they lost so much dough on that one!

Ken also states that not all tractors got the full package. Many got the inner bearing moved to be the outer bearing, which was scrapped, and the new inner bearing was a tapered roller bearing. When I bought my 1958 460 HU about 4 years ago, the axle had play in it. It did have the roller bearings. Due to cost I replaced then with ball bearings since it is highly unlikely it will ever see heavy use, certainly not by me. The serial tag does not have the triangle designating it had been fixed, so this could have been an owner modification and not part of the recall.

460 and 560 tractors were orderedfixed by the factory.Change order #20624 in June 1959.This order was to gut the rearend and replacediff caserear axel anddifferential unit for the 460,560,and660New parts included heavier diff. case, tapered bearings, bull pinion, and brake shaft cage and bearing.Inner axel bearing was removed and reinstalled [in the place] where the outter bearin was, outer bearing was scrapped.A new tapered roller was then installed in its place and the whole shooting match was put back together. All as quoted by Ken Updike in his book.International Harvester Tractors 1955-1985 Later Hoss

I had for gotten about that program. A fellow I worked with and myself would start on a 560, compelely dissasemble put the kit in, set the ring gear and pinion and reassemble in about 8-9 hrs. We had an overhead rolling hoist it made things a lot easier. If my CRS is wright we had 16/17 560's to to.
