I am trying to find out if there is another engine besides the 188 that will fit into my 504. I would like to get away from the 188 because I am having problems with engine balancer and looking for something without it that will fit into the tractor.

anything can be made to fit. the use of frame rails from the factory help widen the possibilities.
least amount of modification would probably be the engine out of a 544 diesel, which is the upgraded version of the 504. I think the engine is a d239. be careful, as the block came in a frame rail version and an engine as the frame versions. I"m not sure if it"s the casting or removable parts that are different. others should know for sure.

My 504 is a INT. utility,no frame rails block is the frame. I have the same problem, balancer casting is cracked where it bolts to block, head is mainly JB weld, last owner let it freeze and crack. Runs good after my backyard in frame OH.Parts for D188 hard to find and pricey. Good little tractor, sorry engine. Would love to find a more modern engine to replace it with. Scared to run it hard, although,so far so good.
