I took the 6 volt Generator and Cutout off my 1948 Cub to the local IH/Case dealer to be checked out as it was not charging. He sent it to a commercial rebuilder to be checked out. That shop told the IH dealer that the Generator and "regulator" were shot and not worth repairing. I got the generator and Cutout back and checked it out myself and found that the wire from the field coil to the field terminal was broken right at the field terminal on the generator. I reattached the wire and cleaned the points on the cutout relay. The generator now charges like new. Evidently that rebuilder did not know a cutout from a regulator or know much about checking out generators either. Good old time mechanics are hard to find these days..... Gale

Here in Mitchell SD, there is a shop, one man, 1000 sq ft tops. He does a gen, mag, alt, starter, small elec motor; while you wait. You "wait" in the haircutting shop next door, while his wife cuts your hair! Best deal in America! 10 dollar haircut and about 40 bucks for a rebuilt unit.

Gale:

I guess I'm lucky. We have a lady with an alternator/starter/generator shop near me. You go in there and her face is smudged with grease, hands black, etc. but she still repairs them all. I brought a spare 6V IH generator to her about a month ago. She checked it our and repaired a broken lead (to the F terminal). She charged me $5. Can't beat that. mike

My dad called them "parts replacers", and that was 15 years ago already!!!

yes, that is so true.i truely believe that in a few more years the fixing thing will be lost.the 6v system is one good example.the first thing they say is put an alternator on it.why? whats wrong with original?6v turns the engine fast enough.they start easy.generators charge.what more do you need?ooh a good mechanic!what is this computerized world coming to?thats my steam for the day, so i now will go and FIX my MH 44 gen.i just bought. the guy wanted to put on an alt. i said on god d m way i will fix that.

Good to hear ya got it working again. Last year I was rebuilding an old 1930s generator off a car for my F-12. When I found out I needed new fields my friend sent me to a place in the Twin Cities, saying if they dont have em, nobody will. Well he had new fields for it, and when he found em he said These are proboly the last fields ever made for that specific generator. Cause I bought truckloads of parts from the original company when they went out of business. Luckily I found a good mechanic. Like you said they are hard to find.
