Just purchased a 1940 A model tractor last week.

Its my first tractor and I am just now learning all about it.

I bought the shop manual but it is not very informative.

It does not run and so far I have determined it is the spring in the magneto that is not causing the snap to make a spark.

the guy I bought it off of said it was "converted" to 12v already, but as I have found what he meant was he put a 12v battery in it. Oh and he "converted the lights also, by removing them.

the starter is bad so I bought a new one today and should have it by the end of next week.

the sediment bowl leaks, so I bought a new gasket and glass bowl which I should also have next week.

the right rear wheel makes noises and wobbles when I move it. I looked online at case and saw the diagram of the rear wheel and I guess it could be one or both of the bearings , but i am not sure.

the steering looks like it is missing the tie rod ball seat (center and end) pieces because the end of the steering arm gear is empty and the tie rods keep falling out.

I have aleady purchased a new 6 volt battery,6 volt starter, 6 volt external coil, cap, rotor , plugs, wires, condensor
should I go ahead and convert the system to negative ground and add a generator or can i put in an alternator with a voltage regulator to drop it down to 6volts? I would like to also add a solenoid and install a switch in the a dash by the seat, is that possible?

thank you for your help in advance

Janicholson said: (quoted from post at 19:12:41 05/03/08) It will work fine on 6v pos ground. if pulled to start the mag will rotate well enough to make fire. Pull it in 3rd gear at about 2 to 3mph, no faster.

Be sure to run a piece of wire up into the hole to the tank to assure fuel flow there.
The wheel might be loose on the rim, and that will make the noise.

The solenoid (relay)is not needed. a starter switch on the starter, with a pull rod, or a heavy amp starter switch at/next to, the dash is good also. John T troubleshooting guide, and other infor in the "search for" box will do wonders. this link is for the diagrams of choice. Stay with 6v on this one, withsingle "o" gauge wires to the starter and ground. JimN

Thank you very much, I will try to see if it will start tommorrow,

Is there a way that I can test the coil that is in the magneto?

One easy way is to pull start it. If it has spark, it should run! It is possible to use an ohm meter on coil windings, but even then, proof is in the spark. not the readings. Look up magnetos in Google. there will be diagrams detailed enough to use an ohm meter. Make sure it has oil in the crankcase, and watch the gauge to be sure it gets pressure up. I would pull it W/O the Mag operating (shut off) until oil pressure was shown on the gauge. There is no reason to ruin a good engine If it needs to be primed. To prime, use as pump oil can and pump oil into the oilpressure gauge fitting hole. as it begins to be filling the passages, it will get harder to pump. Sometimes a small rubber tube is needed to get a seal at the oil gallery to oil can spout. JimN

I want to second the wheel suggestion. I thought sure my right rear had a bid problem with the axle, bearings or final drive. Then took it off to do some painting and found that several of the bolts which hold the rim to the wheel were loose. Lube every bolt & nut on the wheels, then torque them down good, before you tear into anything else.
And if it hasn't run in a while, I'd try taking the carb off and inspecting every little nook and cranny while cleaning it up.
Like Jim said, take the fuel line from the bowl to the carb off and blow that out with a compressor, and with the bowl off, poke a wire up into the gas tank to assure there is no obstruction. Use insulated wire or a thin brass or plastic tool to avoid sparks and remember that fumes in the tank are more dangerous than a full tank. Pull the fuel line elbow off the carb and check the filter screen / clean it. Double check that the plug wires are in the proper order for firing (lot's of us take them off at some point, and may accidently put them back on wrong) and make sure that all wires / cables have a darn good connection. Check ALL fluids of course, then when you finally get spark, it should show signs of life. AS SOON AS IT FIRES up and runs, check your oil pressure. Some new plugs wouldn't hurt, and don't use champion.

Then if you get it running, and it still needs some more lovin, you've already taken care of the basics. But hopefully it will purr with all this prep work! Congratulations and good luck.

Dave

cause I am a dumb*ss and already bought a 6v battery, and 6 volt external coil. I so badly wanted to hear it run I just went out and bought whatever I could find locally to make it work. If I go with the 12v I've got to buy another battery and coil.

Why not keep it 12 volts? When they said converted did they already unhook the internal mag coil and add a external coil??? And if not why convert the mag to an external? If it needs a coil it will probly be about $10.00 more to add the origanel mag coil than to buy a external.? JON
