Finally topping the hill on the Super M. New bearing s bushings and seals and close her up!

However, I've figured out that IT doesn't have bolt torque values for some of the stuff I need.

I'm looking for bolt torque for: Ring gear and carrier bolts, bull gear bolts, pinion shaft bearing retainer bolts and inner axle bearing retaining plate bolts.

None of these are marked as such but did IH use grade 5 on these things?

Hey , I'm not to young anymore and have worked on a few things . I'm probably not the best one to give advice given my current circumstances with my own machine but it sounds like you have some good wrenching experience just use good judgment on the size of the bolts for torque . Remember that cast iron uses different torques than steel would . Some of what you are tightening down has ears of some sort so a positive torque isn't needed like the pinion bearing cages . Not so with the other items you mentioned , got to get those tight !! Just use good grade 8 split washers on everything . A good split washer will hold it on not one you buy by the pound . When I took my M apart I used a short 3/8" drive ratchet or a normal length combination wrench . Nothing on it was all that tight yet it didn't leak and it wasn't loose either . On the carrier and ring bolts and the bull gear retaining and brake drum bolts I used a 1/2 or 3/8" drive cordless impact driver for loosening and tightening . It's better to use torques charts but when you cut corners ... Good luck ! ...Randy

Yeah, I've worked on a few different kinds of things in my life! This is the first time I've dismantled a tractor rear.

I'll think about your idea of using lockwashers. I've also got a big bottle of red Locktight!

I noticed too on mine that most of the bolts were not tight or loose, save for the ring gear/differential bolts.
I wish I could say the same for the wheel hub bolts. I like to have not gotten those loose. I broke a 3/4 drive socket and extension piece in the process. Took several days and involved gentle heating and chemical encouragement!

Just use generic machine shop torque specs for the grade and size bolts you have. You can get them out of the back of just about any service manual,or on line if you want to hunt for them.Torque specs are only listed for those bolts requiring a specific torque, such as head and main bearing bolts.

I have specs like you mentioned, I just don't know what grade these bolts are. For example, the ring gear bolts have no markings, yet I'm positive IH did not use grade 0 bolts for that application.

you would need grade 8 or higher for the ring gear. grade 5 is not enough.

The originals are in great shape so I was planning on re-using them. I agree, a grade 5 would be too soft for those.

I was wondering in general what they used for the non critical bolts.
