O/T lawnmower has gas coming out exhaust

When I tried to start my lawnmower this afternoon it wouldn't catch. I pulled the choke back as I've always done and gave it a couple swift pulls, but nothing. After about 10 pulls I noticed gas was coming out of the exhaust. So I'm guessing I've flooded it?
Anyway, it's not starting. I'm going to let it sit before I try it again. But I'm not sure why this happened in the first place. Any thoughts on what caused it, or what to do next are appreciated.

I have a rule on one-cylinder emgines: I will not attempt a fix without trying a new plug first as half the time that alone fixes it. A plug can look OK but not perform. (OTxOT: I won't fix a printer without first swapping cables, same 50% success rate). If drying it out and a good plug won't make it run, I give them a shot of ether starting spray in the carb. If it won't catch then, your problem is lack of spark for non-plug reason. Check points, condenser, magneto gap, continuity. If it catches and dies, it's a fuel problem. Start from tank and work in. Many times running on ither will shake loose the float needle or whatever else is the problem and you are good to go from there. Excessive use of ether is not good for engines, but I have a 10hp Honda rider that won't catch in the Spring without one or two shots of it. It is now 24 years old and the carb has never been off the machine and it runs great. I still don't know why it won't catch every year. YMMV.

I agree with theDurk. Spark plug is most likely the culpret. Pull plug out and pull the rope a few times to help clear out the cyl, check spark with plug out and put plug back in if it sparks good. If you have more trouble get a new plug.

Sounds like you don't have spark.

Excuse the interruption, needed to make a reply to recover the Farmall board.

Mike: I'd say you flooded it if you pulled it 10 times with the choke on and gas is pouring out the exhaust. In fact, it might be said you drowned it. Pull the spark plug. Turn off the choke. Open the throttle fully. Pull it through about 15 times. Dry the plug off. Check for spark by laying the plug against the block with the wire reconnected to it. If you get a good blue spark then reinstall plug. Make sure the kill switch or lanyard is in the run position (if it has such). Try starting about 4 cranks with no choke. If that does not work, then choke it with two pulls. Then if still not started, turn choke off and again crank without choke.

If that does not work, then check fuel quality. Make sure fuel is fresh.

If that does not work, then junk lawnmower and buy a Woods belly mower for the family Farmall H. Mow with H, thus proving to wife once and for all that getting H was a great idea.

I can't remember if I tilted it up or not after last use (About a week and a half ago). What does that do to it?

The mower has a gravity flow gas system just like your H. If you tip the mower so the tank is high and the cylinder is low, gas will run straight into the cylinder.

Remember, the same things you learned in getting your H running apply to getting your mower running. They are VERY similar in how they operate.

On a mower engine like that, pull the spark plug, stick it back into the boot, and set the threads against a bolt on the engine head. Give the rope a pull. No spark means no spark, and that's why it won't run.

Loss of spark over the winter is pretty typical for small engines. Generally the points need to be filed and the gap reset.

it can cause the carb to let gas straight into the intake, so when you pull the cord it sucks lots of raw gas into the sylinder and then blows it out the exhaust.
Depends on which way you tip it type of carb, etc.

Did you have it tilted up changing oil or anything ?
I did this to one of the inlaws last weekend. pulled the plug , let it sit overnight and it was fine the next day.
I made the mistake of filling the tank before I tilted it up to change the oil and such.

3 things needed for a running engine: fuel, spark, and compression.

You obviously have fuel. Does the engine have reasonable compression?

I'm going to guess that it didn't spark like it should have (or not at all).

First thing I would do is pull the spark plug and have a look at the condition. If it's questionable, replace with a new one. Can always put the new one on the wire and set it against the metal portion of the engine - pull the rope and look for spark...

I've had coils go bad suddenly on lawnmowers before, causing a no spark condition. Hopefully you just need a new plug.
