Plowed up my sunflower patch and disced, but my Super C would finally only run with the choke all the way out and in first gear. In fact, wound up planting in low gear, could hardly keep him running. I sure its a fuel problem, but I'm getting good flow to carb, and the strainer bowl in clean as is the gas tank. Is there a filter acutally inside the carb? Or, could a jet be plugged. It starts fine, and first couple of hours, pulled the plow fine in 2nd gear. What could be wrong with it?? Need to put on cultivators now...but need to get him fixed....Thanks, Cmore

You should hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if there's good suction on your hand. You need good intake manifold vacuum to suck that fuel into the engine. Loose intake can cause this, but you usually hear a whistle coming from the engine and sometimes you don't.
Worn rings, valves and sleeves are another culprit. Doing a compression test will give you an idea what shape the engine is in. Hal

Main jet in carb depending on carb you may be able to remove it without removing carb.

Get a clean bucket and pull the drain plug out of the carburetor - let it flow for a good 5 minutes or even longer. If there is any slow down or stopping of fuel flow you have a problem with the inlet screen or needle and seat in the carb.

If fuel flow continues to be good, try a different coil.

I agree with El Toro.

If you can keep it running by pulling the choke the problem is poor fuel flow to or inside the carb. Be looking for a plugged fuel inlet screen or (more likely) a piece of junk blocking the main metering jet in the carb.

If it isn't the inlet screen to the carburetor you carburetor probably needs a good cleaning and all the jets blown out. Hal

Is the coil getting hot and breaking down?

For sure,

I've got a little 284 that absolutely drove me nuts. Acted just like a starvation problem; didn't die, just wouldn't pull.

Took me forever to finally get around to putting another coil on it and that was the bisquit.

Are you getting a good flow thru the carb when it gets sick? If not, it could be the fuel cap is not venting. Loosen the cap and see if it runs okay.

Otherwise, it is something in the carb that is plugged. Pulling the choke says it needs more fuel.

Little tiny screen at the carb inlet fitting?

I'll take off the "inlet" elbow to the carb...is there a little screen in there? I'm sure the oil bath air cleaner is fine...might have sucked up some junk into the carb...the only way she would pull the 2 row fast hitch planter was in LOW GEAR, with choke all the way out...but I DID get my sunflowers planted!! Only thing planted in my part of the country right now!1 Cmore

Is the oil bath clean in air cleaner? Maybe a air leak around the carb or manifold? Could be some rust or junk in the small screen where the fuel line enters the carb.
