Wide Front Question part 2

Looking at maybe buying this '51 M. Tractor has live hydraulics and powersteering and looks like decent tires.

I'm assuming this is a factory IH wide front, correct?

Just how strong were/are these frontends? Would they stand up to use with a loader picking up 1500lb round bales?

If not, how tough do ya think it'd be to find a restorer who wanted to trade a heavy-duty Schwartz for this original one?

My neighbor loads and unloads about 1000 big round bales avg wt 1350 lbs every year with a Super M and that axle. Uses an F-11 loader. Best there is for the M.

Yep, if I wind up getting the tractor, I'd sure like to find an F-11 to put on it. For some reason, probably due to local dealers back in the day, seems everything ya see around this area has a Du-All on it.

With that said, and at the risk of hijacking my own post here....I know where I can probably get a Du-All with grapplefork real close to home for a reasonable price. Already is on an M but the guy only wants the tractor to use the belt pulley to cut wood so I think I can buy the loader from him. The tractor has a pto hydraulic pump and the guy says the loader's controls are real touchy and probably need rebuilt...would rebuilding the spool valves fix this or is it due to too much pressure outta the pto pump that should be regulated somehow?

Ron,

There's nothing wrong with the DuAl. They are a strong loader.

I just never could get used to their "klunky" feel. They sure do the job tho.

Someone did a nice job sliding that frontend under her. Bet it will stand up to anything ya throw at it.

Ron: That front end was factory issue on every Farmall tractor over 40hp from the days of that Super M to the last 1456. Yes there were different mounting hardware, changes to steering linkage, but the basic axle structure remained the same from 1953 until 1971. When I said over 40 hp, there is one exception, 504.

That looks like a wide front off a 400 or so. They were much better front ends, although not as tough as a Schwartz.
Make sure the spindles are still good and it isn't all welded up where it makes the angle to the bearing cone. They are expensive to repair, at least if you buy new parts.

Super M, yes. Period factory wide front, no. The tie rods would be out in front of the axle in a sort of lateen-rigged affair. They were not good front ends, but they command a price because they're original. They're okay for parade tractors.

That may be a later model IH front end, hard to tell.

That tractor in that photo appears to be a super M. It also looks like an original wide front end for the super M.

Yep it has Super M decals, but the owner said it's a '51 M and didn't all Super M's have disc brakes? Those don't appear to be, do they?

Usually sellers try to BS you and would sell that as a Super M. I like the honesty. Those are drum brakes, which would make it a straight M, and there's nothing at all wrong with that.

I looked a Super M once, turned out to be an M. It had disk brakes, but choke lever was on the wrong side of the carb, serial number was way out of range, and the serial tag had an "S" scratched in front of the model "M". Poorly scratched, didn't fool anybody. I may still have bought it, but there was a lot more wrong it than originally advertised.
