A friend brought me his 1940 Farmall H with a PTO that does not work. I took it apart last night and found the two driving dogs, maybe called ears, were broken off of the shifter tube where it engages with the transmission bottom shaft.

Is this a common problem? Accoring to my parts book this style PTO was only used up to serial number 45613.

I'll have to get on the phone and see if I can find some parts today. It looks like I could install the newer style PTO but would have to replace the transmission bottom shaft. Have any of you had any experience with this problem. Looking for advice, words of wisdom would even help. Thanks much for your help.

Use a magnet to find the broken pieces and replace the tube. I had to replace the drive gear on one last year so count yourself lucky.
Tore the complete transmission down & updated with the newer style.

Where do you live as I have a couple of them. I am in Central Iowa. Don't know if they are what you are looking for or not

I've had the same problem with an early H like yours. I can't remember how big of a job it was to work on. It must have been rather easy or I'd remember it. I did install the larger pto shaft though.
