Rebuilding head on '48 C. Bought new guides and they don't look like the originals. Got them from NAPA. Theses are straight while the originals have a kind of bell shape on the top with the bottom of the bell sitting on the head and would keep them from moving down. Anyone know if these replacements are ok? Do they fit tight enough that they don't move or should I get some others?

Thanks,

Brian

Sounds like you took out the original guides. Later IH production and all replacement guides from IH were the shoulderless type you have in hand. The shoulderless design is pressed to a specific depth. My books are out in the shop, but maybe somebody with the books handy could look it up for you. A depth leaving 1" above the surface of the head is ringing a bell, but PLEASE don't go by that. It may be for another engine I was reading about.

Well, I haven't taken them out yet, but when I took the head to the shop to get checked they had to cut one valve off as it was rusted to the keeper and top piece. But thanks for the info.

Are you doing the head yourself? If not why don't you let the machine shop get the parts--unless, of course, you like doing that yourself.

I ran out and checked for ya. One inch is right. That is from the top of the guide to the top of the head, where the valve spring seats.
