Well teddy, I first want to state that I am no expert, certainly not even on most of you guy's level of experience, but here was my thinking. I just felt that it was theoretically possible that a leaking gasket over time could cause improper valve function when it leaks exhaust into an intake, potentially even valve system damage. Now we all know that damaged or malfuntioning valves can cause real problems to efficiency of the compression stroke, what with air escaping from partially closed valves, and it might be this damage which could cause readings to show low or fluctuate.

Now, while the possibilty of such is pretty remote, nonetheless, the operation of the valves is a very precise timed requirement of proper operation. Should valves be even partially open on the compression stroke, the reading you would recieve in a test, would be lower and not necessarily a reflection of the piston or rings condition. And if as he said, there were alot of missing gaskets / neglect of this engine, then damage from a bad gasket is in fact possible, while not real probable.
