"The only thing running without manifolds will do is eventually burn the valves due to the heat not being carried away from them through the manifold."

Then in this last post, you state...."If the valves are not closing that either means you have poorly adjusted tappet gaps, burnt valves or....."

So, I hope you understand that my point was, as you have already stated, that A can lead to B.

Now with that said, while extremely enjoyable, none of this discussion between you and I is really of any help to francois in his original post. But it has kept me on my toes tonight :D

The "A" you listed will not lead to the 'B" you are inferring unless the headgasket could have a 1 or 2 inch round hole for a leak. A simple gasket leaking would not be a big enough problem to burn the valves. It would take running without an exhaust manifold for a period of time to burn the valves. You are missing the point here. I do not know how else to say that a leaking manifold gasket would not cause a compression test to give any different results. You could take the manifold completely off and still get the same compression reading.

And you are arguing a technical point for some sake other than helping the original poster. I tried to end it on nice note. You are making that very difficult.

You took exception to my note that readings could be screwy. You wrote it in a way that suggested that I didn't know "stuff" from shinola, in that you wanted me to explain "how" to you and "everyone else". Nobody else asked. So I explained it three ways to Sunday for you. If you refuse to accept that two reasonable adults can have valid but differing views, then I can't help you there.

I have a difference of opinion with you, and will not back off from that. The engineers did not put a gasket there (two actually) because they were bored and had extra material. They put them there because cross venting could lead to poor running, and because prolonged, and I emphasis the word prolonged, cross venting and poor running could lead to damage, such as but not limited to burnt valves. I've already indicated that I don't think this necessarily applies to francois's problem, but you want to hammer the point that this is not possible for reasons that only you can explain. I contend it is possible, and will not back off of that.

We disagree. I'm not going to argue this point ad-nauseum with you. If you wish to go on, then I guess you can argue with yourself, but I'm done.

Dave
